Mike Leach once called Big 12 head of officials from sidelines

When you think about all the cameras at a college football game these days it's hard to imagine that a coach could get on his cell phone and make a call without anybody knowing, but according to former Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, it's happened.

According to Harrell, current Washington State coach and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach once called a Big 12 official to complain about the officiating during Texas Tech's 2007 loss to Texas.

"I can remember in the third quarter, he's pulling his cell phone out," Harrell told RedRaiderSports.com (at 13:54 mark). "He always talked to me between series, so he's talking to me and he pulls his cell phone out and he called the Big 12 commissioner. He's like cussing out the Big 12 commissioner, telling him like, 'These refs are screwing us. You better watch my postgame press conference because I've got some stuff to say.'"

Bruce Feldman of CBSSports.com says Leach once told him the same story, only it wasn't the Big 12 commissioner who got an earful from Leach, as Harrell said. It was Walt Anderson, the Big 12 coordinator of officials.

A quick look back to the box score of that 2007 game in which Texas won 59-43 shows that Texas Tech was called for six penalties for 68 yards. Which, honestly, doesn't seem like a whole lot, at least not enough to call the commissioner on your cell phone during the game to complain about.

Especially after you see that, in that same game, Texas was called for seven penalties for 89 yards.

Of course, justified or not, it's not as if Leach is the first person to think Big 12 officials were making calls in Texas' favor. Feeling that way is a tradition among Big 12 fans and coaches.
