Clemson's offense rolled through Georgia Tech during the first half of their Thursday night ACC showdown. The Tigers jumped out to a double-digit halftime lead, thanks in part to three touchdown passes from Tajh Boyd.
The Yellow Jackets defense appeared to have Boyd bottled in the first quarter, but eventually the senior quarterback found mismatches and connected with Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant for touchdowns of 41 and 76 yards, respectively. The latter score came just moments after Georgia Tech's first touchdown of the game, and the deflating feeling it brought on for the Yellow Jackets is captured perfectly in this GIF from our own Tom Fornelli.
That score moved Boyd ahead of former N.C. State quarterback Philip Rivers to No. 1 on the ACC's list for career passing touchdowns. At halftime that number is set at 96, but we anticipate him to extend that record further before the end of the season.
For Georgia Tech, a team that is not built to score in a hurry, big deficits like this can be tough to overcome. The Yellow Jackets need the win to finish 6-2 in conference play and guarantee a share of the ACC Coastal title. The Tigers, on the other hand, are hoping to stay in contention for an at-large BCS bid with Florida State already clinching the Atlantic.
