Virginia State declared ineligible for playoffs

The CIAA has declared Virginia State ineligible for the Division II playoffs after several Virginia State players attacked Winston-Salem State's starting quarterback before the conference championship game. The CIAA canceled the game following the incident.

The CIAA made the decision to declare Virginia State ineligible after an emergency conference call of its board of directors.

Winston-Salem State quarterback Rudy Johnson was "viciously beaten" in the bathroom during a luncheon on Friday before the championship game. Virginia State running back Lamont Daniel Britt has since been charged with misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury.

Winston-Salem State will play in the Division II playoffs following its 9-1 season, and will host Slippery Rock this weekend.
