North Dakota fires Chris Mussman as football coach

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

North Dakota has fired Chris Mussman after posting a 31-34 record during his six season tenure as head coach.

UND's season concluded over the weekend, and on Monday athletic director Brian Faison announced it was time for a change. Mussman posted a 3-8 record in 2013, including 2-6 in conference play.

"Coach Mussman and I met this morning at which time I shared with him my decision to make a change in our football leadership," Faison said. "I want to thank Chris for his service to UND and wish him well in his future endeavors."

Mussman's tenure has been notable for the program, as he led UND during the transition into Division I FCS play and the Big Sky conference.

"At the end of the day, we expect to compete in the Big Sky," Faison said via Grand Forks Herald. "That's the level of competition we're going to have to compete at year in and year out in the Big Sky. I felt like we needed to make a change in the program at this point in time to continue that process and build to that level."

Mussman arrived at North Dakota in 1999 after he was first hired by former head coach Dale Lennon as the offensive line coach. He was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2001 and took over as the head coach before the 2008 season.

According to Faison, a national search will begin immediately for a new head coach.
