Boise State's Chris Petersen withdraws from USC coaching race

USC's search firm reached out to a rep for Boise State head coach Chris Petersen, but Petersen has withdrawn his name from consideration, according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation.

Petersen, who has posted a 92-12 record in eight seasons at Boise, appears ready to stay at the school for the foreseeable future.

ESPN reported earlier Monday that Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian has interviewed for the Trojans job. Interim head coach Ed Orgeron is also expected to receive consideration. ESPN also reported Petersen had withdrawn after "mutual interest."

Petersen has had opportunities in the past -- well, virtually every year -- and has turned them down to stay at Boise, which paid $2.2 million this season as part of a reworked contract. Petersen went 8-4 this year, his worst in eight Boise seasons, but Petersen has better long-term job security than perhaps any other coach in the country after averaging more than 10 wins per year.
