A school spokesperson confirmed to the Associated press that Russell had surgery to fix a torn labrum in his throwing solder on Thursday. The procedure was performed by Dr. James Andrews, and the recovery will keep him out of the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31.
After an extremely productive junior season that included a school record with 2,897 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, Russell battled through injuries during the Bulldogs' 2013 campaign and finished with just 875 yards and five touchdowns.
Mississippi State was forced to start freshman quarterback Damian Williams against Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl because of injuries to Russell and Dak Prescott. Prescott, dealing with a nerve issue in his non-throwing shoulder, entered the game in the fourth quarter and led the Bulldogs to a victory that sealed bowl eligibility.
Mississippi State will face Rice in the Liberty Bowl. The Owls won the Conference USA title by beating Marshall, claiming the program's first outright conference championship since 1957 and third 10-win season in school history.
