Ohio State has another position to fill on its defensive staff after Mike Vrabel announced Thursday that he would be joining Bill O'Brien in Houston as the Texans' linebackers coach.
I am thankful for everyone assoc with TOSU for 3 great years and my family and I are excited to join the Houston Texans as the LB coach.— Mike Vrabel (@CoachVrabel50) January 9, 2014
Vrabel coached the linebackers when he joined the Buckeyes staff in 2011 before shifting to defensive line coach for the past two seasons. Urban Meyer already lost co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Everett Withers, now the head coach at James Madison.
While Vrabel will be missed on the defensive staff, the effects of his absence will also be felt on the recruiting trail. 247Sports ranks Vrabel as the No. 1 recruiter in the Big Ten and No. 10 nationally. Ohio State will not plummet in the recruiting rankings without Vrabel -- Ohio State being Ohio State and Urban being Urban -- but this is nonetheless setback for Meyer's staff in the final weeks before national signing day.
Vrabel was a primary contributor on the New England Patriots when Bill O'Brien was an assistant under Bill Belichick from 2007-11. He will reportedly join several of O'Brien's assistants from Penn State on the Houston staff.
