Stanford safety Ed Reynolds announced Tuesday that he will enter the 2014 NFL Draft, joining left guard David Yankey as the second Cardinal to leave early for the pros.

"After much thought and discussion with my family and mentors, I have decided to enter the NFL Draft," Reynolds said. "I would to thank the Stanford football family for putting me in this position and preparing me for the next level. A very special thanks to our coaching staff, support staff and my teammates for making the memories of these past four years last a lifetime.

"I would like to extend my deepest and most sincere gratitude to the Stanford community for its support during my time on The Farm. A better script could not have been written for my experience at Stanford as a student-athlete."

Reynolds ranked third on the Cardinal defense with 87 tackles while playing a key role in run support and adding four pass beakups and one interception. In 2012, Reynolds' first year as a starter, the safety broke out with six interceptions and 301 interception-return yards -- one yard away shy of the NCAA single-season record.

In a class with few surefire prospects at his position, Reynolds stands out among his peers and could be one of the top three safeties selected in May. Reynolds is considered by many, including, to be in that top group of free safeties along with Louisville's Calvin Pryor, Alabama's Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix and USC's Dion Bailey.

According to a university release, Reynolds will complete work toward his degree in political science in the offseason. Reynolds' father, also Ed Reynolds, was linebacker in the NFL from 1983-92.
