By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer

Arkansas State defensive lineman Markel Owens was shot and killed in his home on Wednesday night.

According to the Jackson Sun, Johnny Shivers, Owens' stepfather, was arriving home when he was forced inside the apartment by two armed men. The men demanded money, and a struggle ensued between the armed men, Shivers and Owens. Both Owens and Shivers were shot during the incident, and then the gunmen shot Owens' mother.

Owens and Shivers died as a result of their wounds. Owens' mother was treated and released from the hospital.

No arrests have been made.

Arkansas State confirmed the death of Owens on Thursday.

"Our worst fears were realized as an athletics department after being notified early this morning about the unfortunate news about Markel," Arkansas State athletics director Terry Mohajir said in an official statement. "We're deeply saddened and our utmost sympathies go out to his family, teammates and classmates. Please join me in prayer for so many people who are being impacted by the loss of Markel."

"Markel was a part of our Red Wolves family, and it is obvious he was a well-liked and respected member of our team who will be missed," said head coach Blake Anderson added. "We are doing everything possible to comfort his teammates, and we extend our compassion to his family during this difficult time."
