Miami running back Duke Johnson is not expecting to participate in the Hurricanes' spring practice, due to an ankle injury that held him out the final five games of the 2013 season.

Johnson told the Miami Herald on Sunday that he should be cleared to work out in the next couple of months, but there were no promises for spring practice.

"I'm really excited in the progress I've made, and everyone else [at UM] is excited, too," said Johnson, who at Hollywood McArthur High for tryouts for the South Florida Express 7-on-7 football team and walking around under his own power.

"I'm just ready to get back." "I don't believe I will [participate this spring]. But if anything changes, you'll see. But I don't really think so."

Along with rehabbing, Johnson's main focus this offseason is putting in extra work in the class and weight rooms, as well as keeping a positive attitude since sustaining the injury against Florida State on Nov. 2.

"I wouldn't say frustrating but it's been good," Johnson said of his mind-set. "I'm just rehabbing and getting back and helping the team anyway I can."

Miami has not announced a full spring practice schedule, but the 2014 Spring Game is set for Saturday, April 12 at 6 p.m..

Johnson rushed for 920 yards and six touchdowns in eight games in 2013, his true sophomore season. The former ACC Rookie of the Year is expected to be a key piece of the Hurricanes offense in 2014, especially with the departure of three-year starting quarterback Stephen Morris.
