UAB to hire Jacksonville State's Bill Clark

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

The search to replace former UAB coach Garrick McGee will end with the hire of Jacksonville State coach Bill Clark., citing multiple sources, reported Tuesday that Clark "spent at least eight hours with UAB President Dr. Ray Watts on Monday working to finalize a contract." By Tuesday night, Clark had reportedly told his Jacksonville State players that he was leaving for UAB, and per the Associated Press, Gamecock athletic director Warren Koegel issued a statement confirming Clark's resignation to take a new head coaching position.

The AP also reported that position will be UAB's. The Blazers have scheduled a press conference for Wednesday at 3 p.m. to announce its new football coach.

Garrick McGee resigned on Jan. 9 to join Bobby Petrino's staff at Louisville as offensive coordinator. McGee left UAB with a 5-19 record, including just three wins in Conference USA play, in two seasons.

Clark led Jacksonville State to an 11-4 record in 2013, leading the Gamecocks to the FCS quarterfinals in his first year as head coach. It was the first double-digit win season since the program won the D-II National Championship in 1992.

The Gamecocks have already announced, per the Associated Press, that offensive coordinator John Grass will be promoted to replace Clark as head coach.
