Stanford assistant Lance Anderson promoted to defensive coordinator

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Stanford continued its recent practice of promoting from within the program, elevating outside linebackers coach Lance Anderson to defensive coordinator.

Anderson takes over the title -- which is officially the Willie Shaw Director of Defense -- previously held by Derek Mason. Mason accepted the head coaching job at Vanderbilt last week.

In seven seasons on the Stanford staff, Anderson has coached both the defensive tackles (2007-09) and outside linebackers. He will continue to coach the outside linebackers in his new role, as the team hopes to continue its recent defensive dominance in the Pac-12.

"Lance has worked under two of the best defensive minds in football in Vic Fangio and Derek Mason," Stanford coach David Shaw said. "He will continue our defensive tradition of being aggressive, being physical and setting the tone for how we play football here at Stanford University."

Anderson also served as the team's recruiting coordinator from 2007-11 and the school has praised his work as a liaison to the admissions office. According to the school release, Stanford has earned consecutive academic awards from the American Football Coaches Association for posting a 100 percent graduation rate.
