Class Snapshot: Texas

By JC Shurburtt | 247Sports

Class Snapshot: Texas (22 commits)

Current Rank: No. 17 nationally, No. 2 Big 12, (0.8896 average 247Sports Composite Rating)

Top Commit: Defensive end Derick Roberson (San Antonio, Texas/Brennan) is a skilled pass rushing end that has excellent upside. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Under Armour All-American is the No. 4 strongside defensive end prospect in the 2014 class and the No. 64 overall prospect according to 247Sports Composite rankings.

Class Strength: Wide receiver. This is one of the better groups of pass catchers heading to one school in the country. Provided they all sign with the Longhorns (there's been talk of some taking officials to other programs, Armanti Foreman (Texas City, Texas), Lorenzo Joe (Abilene, Texas/Cooper), Roderick Bernard (Houston, Texas/Sharpstown), Dorian Leonard (Longview, Texas) and Garrett Gray (Marble Falls, Texas) all possess excellent skill sets. It is a versatile group as there is a nice mix of speed (Foreman, Bernard) and size (Leonard is 6-foot-4, 200 pounds and Gray stands 6-foot-4.5, 212) and then an excellent all-around target in Joe (6-foot-2.5, 196 pounds, 4.5-second speed in the 40-yard dash).

Sleeper: Safety Jason Hall (Grand Prairie, Texas/South Grand Prairie) enjoyed a very strong senior season and showed the athletic ability to play cornerback, even though he's a legitimate 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.

Top Remaining Target: Another big receiver- Emanuel Porter (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln) is a 6-foot-5, 190-pound athlete with high upside that is committed to TCU (seems like every recruiting cycle we use those exact terms to describe most of the Horned Frogs' commits). He was once a Longhorns commit, but flipped to TCU nine days ago. Texas would like to get him back in the fold.

Remaining Needs: It is paramount for Texas to add defensive tackles in this class. Former Louisville commits Poona Ford (Hilton Head, S.C.) and Chris Nelson (Lakeland, Fla./Victory Christian) are both strong possibilities. It would be the second straight recruiting cycle that Texas failed to land a single defensive tackle prospect if they miss out on one this time. That would not be a welcomed development. The Horns also are trying to keep four-star linebacker Otaro Alaka (Houston, Texas/Cy Falls) from flipping to Texas A&M. As one of their most highly-regarded commits, it's important from a momentum and perception standpoint not to lose the 6-foot-3, 205-pound striker to the Aggies. Great recruiting momentum and positive perception are definite needs any time there is a new staff and those things can carry into future cycles.

Top Recruiter: Tight ends coach Bruce Chambers, the lone holdover from former coach Mack Brown's staff, led the charge to edge rival Texas A&M for four-star linebacker/safety Edwin Freeman (Arlington, Texas/Bowie), who is Strong's most highly-touted commitment to date in Austin (committed earlier this month). He also was the primary recruiter of record for Hall, linebacker Cameron Hampton (Dallas, Texas/Carter) and Arizona Western Junior College tight end Blake Whiteley, who has already enrolled at UT. Chambers, a Dallas native, is ranked as the No. 8 recruiter in the Big 12 and the No. 81 recruiter nationally according to 247Sports Recruiter Rankings for the 2014 cycle.
