Iowa's crowded depth chart at quarterback has reportedly gotten just a little less crowded.
HawkeyeReport.com reported that rising senior quarterback Cody Sokol has elected to transfer out of the program, possibly to either Louisiana Tech or Ball State. A junior college transfer who was part of the 2012 Hawkeye recruiting class, Sokol did not attempt a pass in his two seasons with the Hawkeyes, redshirting in 2012 and serving as Kirk Ferentz's third-string quarterback in 2013.
Sokol hoped to earn the 2013 starting job after the depature of James Vandenberg, but lost out to sophomore Jake Rudock, with redshirt freshman C.J. Beathard earning the backup nod. With both Rudock and Beathard back in 2014 and two other scholarship quarterbacks on the roster after the addition of well-regarded 2014 recruit Tyler Wiegers, Sokol faced a long road to playing time.
Sokol was a three-star recruit ranked the No. 3 junior college pro-style quarterback in the class of 2012 after coming out of Desert Vista Community College in Scottsdale, Ariz. Sokol has one year of eligibility remaining.
