Rules committee will not vote on '10-second rule'

For the last month the college football world has debated about a proposed rule that would keep offenses from snapping the ball before the 29-second mark of the play clock. It turns out that all the debate was for nothing.

The rules committee had been scheduled to vote on the rule on Thursday, March 6. Well, the rules committee will still be voting on proposed rule changes this week, but the "10-second rule" will not be one of them.

CBSSports.com's Jeremy Fowler was able to confirm that the committee has tabled the rule and will not vote on it.

Which means that it will not be enacted for the 2014 season. This rule was introduced with player safety in mind, yet there was no data to support that it did anything to make players any safer. So it's nice to see that the rules committee isn't going to vote the proposal up or down without gathering more information on it first.

Should there be more definitive information about the supposed dangers of up-tempo offense at this time next year, then the proposal will probably be introduced, and the rules committee will have a much better idea of what it's voting on and why.
