Navy player in coma after collapsing at practice

By Tom Fornelli | College Football Writer

Navy slotback Will McKamey collapsed during practice Saturday and had to be airlifted to the hospital at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore. According to the Baltimore Sun, McKamey is now in a coma after undergoing surgery to remove a brain clot.

McKamey's mother said he was showing "very little response" but that they had seen "some very small improvements and reactions to light."

Navy also issued a statement late Saturday afternoon.

"The entire Naval Academy family is shaken by this turn of events and we are providing all the support we can to Will and his family."

As McKamey's mother mentioned in the statement, this is not the first time this has happened. While a senior in high school, McKamey collapsed on the field during a game and had to be airlifted to a local hospital. He was treated at the hospital then but did not undergo surgery.

McKamey would not return during his senior season, but he would be named Mr. Football in the state of Tennessee in 2012.
