Miami's quarterback competition is wide open thanks to an injury to senior quarterback Ryan Williams.

Williams, who was expected to take over the starting role from the departed Stephen Morris, suffered a torn ACL during a scrimmage on Friday night. According to assistant athletic director Chris Yandle, Williams will undergo surgery on the knee next week.

While no timetable has been announced for Williams' return, the odds of him seeing the field in 2014 aren't good.

Williams, who transferred to Miami from Memphis in 2011, appeared in four games for the Canes last season, throwing for 369 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. With Williams out redshirt freshmen Kevin Olsen is likely to take over reps with the first team this spring.
