Earlier this month Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury was toying with the idea of possibly playing in Texas Tech's spring game. Now he may have to seriously consider playing for the team this fall.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports that walk-on quarterbacks Tanner Tausch and Mike Richardson are leaving the program. Tausch, who ran the second-team offense during the spring, will remain in school, while Richardson is leaving in hopes of finding playing time elsewhere.
Normally two walk-ons leaving wouldn't be that big of a deal, but with three other quarterbacks leaving the program this offseason, that means Davis Webb is currently the only quarterback on Tech's roster. Now, there are reinforcements coming this summer, as Patrick Mahomes was the lone quarterback in Tech's 2014 recruiting class, and he certainly looks to have the inside track on the backup quarterback job. Though it's not that simple, either, as Mahomes -- the son of former major league pitcher Pat Mahomes -- also plays baseball and could be drafted by an MLB team this summer.
There's also another walk-on en route, and one with a familiar name, as Vincent Testaverde -- the son of Heisman winner Vinny Testaverde -- announced earlier this week he'd be enrolling at Texas Tech. The Avalanche-Journal also reports that two other walk-on quarterbacks plan to join the team this summer.
As things currently sit, however, it's Davis Webb and Davis Webb alone. Kliff may want to get that arm loosened up, just in case.
