JUCO QB Patrick Thomas officially joins Louisville, eligible for 2014

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Louisville officially announced the signing Patrick Thomas, one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks from junior college, on Monday.

Thomas led Georgia Military College to a 11-1 record in 2013 and an appearance in the NJCAA Championship Game. He committed to UAB in December but opted to follow then-head coach Garrick McGee to his new post as offensive coordinator at Louisville.

"I'm pleased that Patrick has joined our program," head coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement released by the school. "He is a dual-threat quarterback who adds depth to that position heading into the fall. Patrick is talented and I'm excited to add him to the mix as we head into the ACC this season."

Thomas can play immediately and will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Petrino named Will Gardner the starting quarterback after the conclusion of spring practice, a decision fans could have predicted after watching the 6-foot-5 sophomore throw for 542 yards on 32-of-37 passing in the spring game -- as colleague Jerry Hinnen noted at the time, that would be an impressive stat line even against air.

Thomas will join a crowded group behind Gardner with senior Brett Nelson, redshirt freshman Kyle Bolin and incoming freshman Reggie Bonnafon, a three-star dual-threat quarterback from nearby Trinity High School. Penn State transfer Tyler Ferguson will sit out the 2014 season due to NCAA rules.
