Report: Texas 'backing away' from Max Wittek

Though not official, it's long been assumed that USC transfer quarterback Max Wittek was going to end up at Texas. Ever since Wittek announced his transfer, he's seemed interested in Texas, and Texas has seemed interested in him.

Though that no longer appears to be the case, at least from one end.

A report in the Austin American-Statesman says Texas is now "backing away" from offering Wittek a scholarship, though it does not give a reason why, and Wittek himself was unaware of any changes in his status with Texas.

Wittek and his family have visited Austin multiple times -- including Texas' spring game -- and he was being recruited by Tommie Robinson, who was at USC last season. The report also says that Texas coaches expected a commitment from Wittek in February but instead they were told he was going to look at other schools to make sure he was making the right decision.

Other schools Wittek has reportedly shown interest in are Hawaii (aren't we all?), Louisville and Pittsburgh.

As for Texas, if it truly is backing off Wittek it must have its reasons, but those reasons could leave the Longhorns without a lot of depth at quarterback this fall. David Ash will be back after missing just about all of 2013 due to a concussion, but he's also coming back after missing nearly an entire season with a concussion. Given the nature of concussions, there's absolutely no guarantee that Ash will be able to avoid another one in 2014.

Behind Ash is sophomore Tyrone Swoopes, who was a four-star member of Texas' 2013 recruiting class and Jerrod Heard, a four-star member of the 2014 recruiting class. That's not a lot of experience behind Ash.
