LOOK: 40-foot sinkhole opens in Austin Peay football stadium

Austin Peay's offseason renovations to the football stadium have hit a snag with the emergence of a 40-foot sinkhole where the field meets the track.

School officials told NewsChannel5.com that the hole, initially the size of a desk, first appeared a couple of weeks ago. Construction crews working on the renovations to Governor's Stadium started work to stop the whole from growing, but it expanded and swallowed part of the field and track.

The estimated size of the sinkhole, as of Monday evening, was 40 feet deep and 30-by-50 wide.

“We're not going to skip any steps. That's the reason I brought the engineers back out because it's not going the way we thought it was going ,so it's time to let the professionals look at it and tell us which way to go. Once they do that we can just continue the process,” project superintendent Mike Jenkins via NewsChannel5.com.

The renovations to Governor's Stadium are still expected to be completed in time for the 2014 football season.
