North Carolina incoming freshman charged with felony larceny

A North Carolina football signee was arrested last week and charged with felony larceny after authorities say he stole more than $50,000 of jewelry.

Avery Edwards, 18, recently graduated from Ravenscroft High School and has been living at his parents' house before his scheduled arrival on campus in Chapel Hill. According to the News & Observer, the victim of the theft was an acquaintance.

Details on the arrest, via the N&O:

Wake County sheriff's deputies charged Avery Hayden Edwards, 18, of Wakefalls Drive with taking five watches and one pair of diamond stud earrings valued at $53,000, according to an arrest warrant filed Thursday at the Wake County Magistrate's Office.

Deputies said the theft occurred May 23, and they obtained a warrant for Edwards' arrest Tuesday, court records show.

Edwards' attorney told the News & Observer that his client turned himself in to the authorities and returned the missing items to the owner.

"Avery and his parents met with me earlier this week to inform us of the charges," Fedora said in a statement on Friday. "I believe Avery is a good kid who made a terrible mistake. We are just a few weeks away from welcoming the majority of our incoming freshmen to summer school and this is disappointing news. Avery and his parents immediately made our admissions office aware of the situation and we are working with them on the proper protocol moving forward."

Edwards was a three-star prospect according to 247Sports and ranked in the Top 25 nationally among tight ends. The Raleigh, NC, product also had offers from Arkansas, Florida State, Georgia and Louisville, along with several in-state schools (North Carolina State, Duke, Wake Forest and Appalachian State).
