Nebraska WR commit signs contract with Milwaukee Brewers

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Nebraska signee Monte Harrison has decided to bypass a college football career to play professional baseball for the Milwaukee Brewers franchise.

Monte Harrison, a four-star wide receiver according to 247Sports, was selected by the Brewers as the No. 50 overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft last week. MLB.com reported that Harrison and the team agreed to terms on a $1.8 million bonus; more than the slot amount for his draft pick.

CBSSports.com's baseball insider Jon Heyman called Harrison a "superb athlete" and projected the high school star to be picked by the Rangers at No. 30. Over at Huskers Illustrated, Michael Bruntz writes that Harrison's two-sport status may have an impact on his contract negotiations with Milwaukee.

MLB Network analysts said concerns about Harrison's signability, as well as the dollar amount thrown out by Harrison's advisor prior to the draft, may have led to his slide down the draft board. The slot amount for the No. 50 commit in the draft is about $1.1 million.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Harrison has a close relationship with Nebraska head coach Darin Erstad, who Harrison first committed to last summer, and the team will likely have to pay more to buy out Harrison's football career.

Harrison caught 60 passes for 1,007 yards and 13 touchdowns for Lee's Summit West in 2013. He signed with the Cornhuskers after also receiving offers from Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan State and Missouri.

Luckily for Nebraska, the Cornhuskers wide receiver depth for the future did receive a boost from the transfer of former Washington wideout Damore'ea Stringfellow. Stringfellow, however, will not available for the 2014 season while he sits out in accordance with NCAA transfer rules.
