Indiana will have one less quarterback on the depth chart this season, as the school announced Wednesday that Tre Roberson won't return to the team this season and is planning to transfer.

"We appreciate and thank Tre for his contributions to our football program both on and off the field," said Indiana coach Kevin Wilson in a release from the school. "He is an outstanding player and a great young man. We wish him well as he moves forward with his career."

"I want to thank the coaching staff, my teammates and Indiana University for all of their support over the last three years," said Roberson in the same release. "My time in Bloomington will always hold a special place in my heart. I wish everyone at IU all the best as I move on to the next chapter in my life."

Roberson's impending transfer is certainly a change of direction from the way his Hoosier career began. He becames the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the Hoosiers in 2011, but then suffered a broken leg in the second game of the 2012 season that cost him the rest of the season. He returned in 2013, but made only four starts and finished the year with 1,128 yards and 15 touchdowns and rushed for 423 yards and five touchdowns while splitting time with Nate Sudfeld.

With Roberson out of the picture Sudfeld would seem to be the clear frontrunner for the starting job this fall.

There is no indication of where Roberson will transfer, but should he move on to another FBS school he'll have one year of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2014 season.
