San Jose State linebacker Jared Leaf hopes plans to compete in 2014 after suffering severe burns in an apartment fire in April.

Leaf addressed local media for the first time since the incident on Monday. Joined by this mother, the Spartans linebacker gave his account of the fire and an update on his current condition. He described the experience as the "worst pain" of his life after running through a "wall of fire" to escape the third-floor apartment.

"There was only one way out and that was through the front door," Leaf said. "And I just ran to the window, took a breath of fresh air, held it and ran out the door and ran through blackness and then red and orange, and then just light."

Leaf suffered second-degree burns on his back and arms and according to NBC Bay Area, his recovery "included a medically induced coma and skin grafts."

It is unknown if Leaf injuries will heal enough to be cleared for competition in 2014, but he told reporters on Monday that his sensitive skin is getting "exponentially" better every day.
