Texas A&M linebacker Shaan Washington is expected to miss four to six weeks after suffering a broken collarbone, Kevin Sumlin confirmed after practice on Monday.

The sophomore linebacker was listed as a potential starter on the preseason depth chart -- listed at the strongside position along with senior Donnie Baggs -- and was expected to play an important role on special teams. Washington recorded 26 tackles in 12 games of action as a freshman, with four tackles for loss and a forced fumble.

According to the San Antonio Express-News, Sumlin will let Washington decide whether or not to redshirt following his recovery from the injury. The current timetable has him back in action in early-to-mid September; an easier stretch of the schedule that includes Lamar, Rice and SMU.

Washington's injury is yet another setback for a Texas A&M defense already lacking in experience after the departures of returning starters Darian Claiborne, Isaiah Golden and Gavin Stansbury. While most fans are closely watching the quarterback competition between Kenny Hill and Kyle Allen, it's the other side of the ball that presents the biggest concern heading into the season opener against South Carolina.
