BYU WR Devon Blackmon tweets he has been suspended over earrings

By Jerry Hinnen | College Football Writer

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall has said he would prefer to keep his team's disciplinary matters in-house. His players continue to have other ideas.

Barely a week after star tailback Jamaal Williams told reporters he would miss the Cougars' season opener for a violation of the school's honor code, wide receiver Devon Blackmon tweeted that he, too, was suspended for his team's trip to UConn.

"Rules are rules … Abide by them or suffer the consequences … Looking forward to the Texas game," Blackmon wrote in a tweet on his since-deleted account, per the Salt Lake Tribune.

When Tribune reporter Jay Drew responded to the tweet with his own, Blackmon replied "yea, We have team standards, and there's consequences if you don't follow them, I shouldn't wear earrings But I'll bounce back."

The BYU honor code prohibits -- among many, many other things -- male students from having their ears or any other part of their body pierced. As noted by the Tribune, however, at least one former Cougar tweeted that wearing earrings would not rise to the level of a suspension-worthy offense.

Blackmon is a former Oregon signee who transferred to BYU after a single season at Riverside City College. 247Sports rated him a three-star recruit and the class of 2014's No. 11 JUCO wide receiver.
