Fun as "House That Howard Built" nickname might be, Howard Schnellenberger won't have FAU Stadium officially named for him. (That honor will go to a still-yet-to-be-determined sponsor.) But he will get the next-best honor available.

FAU Owl Access reported Wednesday that the FAU Board of Trustees has voted to name the stadium's playing surface Howard Schnellenberger Field, honoring the legendary coach who coached FAU for the first 11 seasons of the program's existence and took it to an FCS playoff semifinal and a pair of bowl games.

“It's very humbling to have such a great honor bestowed on the Schnellenberger family, and I thank the Board of Trustees, my coaches and players who helped make this come true,” Schnellenberger said. “It's a high point in my personal and professional life.”

The field will officially be known as Howard Schnellenberger Field at FAU Stadium. The 29,000-seat on-campus facility opened at the start of the 2011 season after years of campaigning and fund-raising on Schnellenberger's part.

Schnellenberger already has a statue of his likeness inside the stadium after guiding the fledgling Owls to a 41-56 record in his 11 seasons.
