LSU vs. Wisconsin at Houston's Reliant Stadium is one of the premier match-ups of college football's opening week, and of the 2014 season's entire nonconference slate. And it's more than possible that no one outside the two locker rooms will know who'll start at quarterback for either team when it kicks off in just 10 days.
After his team's Tuesday scrimmage, Les Miles told reporters there was no separation between sophomore Anthony Jennings and true freshman Brandon Harris -- and that both might see the field vs. the Badgers.
“There's an opportunity to see both quarterbacks play," Miles said, per Geaux247. We still have several practices left. I think I'll wait [to name a starter] until I see how I want to play the guys."
Miles said he would inform Jennings and Harris of who would start the Thursday before the game, but gave no indication he would share that information publicly.
Even as his opponent, the Badgers' Gary Andersen would no doubt approve. Per the Associated Press, Andersen said after his team's Monday scrimmage that he would likely make a decision between juniors Joel Stave and Tanner McEvoy sometime this week, but that he would not make any disclosure to the media.
"There's no big announcement," Andersen said. "We don't make a big announcement for the right tackle, don't make a big announcement for the starting nose guard and we're not going to do that for the quarterback, either."
However coy Andersen plays, it will nonetheless be a surprise if Stave doesn't get the nod after leading the Badgers to a Capital One Bowl berth as the starter last season. Things are more murky for the Tigers, where Jennings has a clear edge in experience on Harris after guiding LSU to wins over Arkansas and Iowa in relief of Zach Mettenberger to close 2013, but the four-star dual-threat Harris is widely seen as the more athletic, more talented, and higher-ceilinged long-term option.
But in both cases, there's likely to be some level of uncertainty right up until the offenses take the field -- one that makes what was already one of the most interesting matchups of Week 1 that much more intriguing.
