ARLINGTON, Tex. -- Mike Gundy came into Saturday night's game with Florida State not knowing what he'd get from one of the youngest rosters in the country.

He left with the game film of a 37-31 war with the defending national champions and a boatload of experience for his freshmen and sophomores.

"You don't ever know what to expect with so many young players on the field," said Gundy. "But there was not any fear in any of their eyes. And they made some mistakes but they made mistakes going full speed."

"The guys didn't have the deer-in-the-headlights look at all. You know, er played a great football team. But they stood toe to toe."

In all 14 freshmen or redshirt freshmen played for Oklahoma State on Saturday but it was another newcomer -- this one a junior college transfer named Tyreek Hill -- who was a difference-maker.

Hill had 278 all-purpose yards and was all over the field in a game in which Florida State is known for, you know, being all over the field.

"Well, we know he's fast," said Gundy about Hill. "We've confirmed that because those guys chasing him are fast. And he competed."

It wasn't just Hill that competed, either. An unranked Oklahoma State team might have reset its expectations for the season even in a loss.

"I thought they did a heck of a job," said Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher. "I told you Mike has got a good football team and he's a heck of a football coach. He has done a great job for a long time."

If Saturday was any indication the rebuilding years are long over in Stillwater. It's all reloading from here on out for Gundy and Co.
