CBSSports.com Players of the Week (Sept. 1)

By Chip Patterson | College Football/Basketball Writer

Every Monday, we will highlight the best and brightest performances from the weekend with the CBSSports.com Players of the Week. The honors will run through the end of the regular season right up until the CBS Sports All-America Team in December. If a performance from Miami-Louisville warrants consideration, it will be noted in the Week 2 honors.

Offensive Player of the Week: Georgia RB Todd Gurley

Gurley was the star of Saturday, pounding the Clemson defense for 198 yards (13.2 yards per carry) and three touchdowns on the ground while adding a 100-yard kickoff return score. Mark Richt called Gurley "the best player in America" after the 45-21 win, and as long as he stays healthy he should continue to be in that conversation.

Defensive Player of the Week: UCLA LB Eric Kendricks

Kendricks led a Bruins defense that accounted for three touchdowns in UCLA's too-close-for-comfort 28-20 win at Virginia. Myles Jack gets a lot of recognition, and did add 13 tackles on Saturday, but Kendricks is the physical 230-pound senior that holds the unit together. Kendricks led the team with 16 tackles and ran an interception back 37 yards for one of those three defensive touchdowns.

Specialist of the Week: Utah WR Kaelin Clay

Kaelin Clay has one year of eligibility remaining after joining the Utes from Mount San Antonio College, and he wasted no time making an impact with two return touchdowns in the win over Idaho State. Clay, a former high school standout at Long Beach Poly, redshirted one year at Cal where he made an impression on special teams. After going to junior college, he's making that special teams impact on the field for Utah.

Freshman of the Week: USF RB Marlon Mack

It was Marlon Mack's second touchdown (of four) that gave USF its first lead of the game against Western Carolina, and his record-breaking performance helped Willie Taggart avoid losing to an FCS opponent at home for the second straight season. Mack set a new American Athletic Conference single-game rushing record with 275 yards, and three of his four touchdowns came on runs of 50+ yards. As of Monday morning, Mack holds the highest single-game rushing total this season.
