Expect the atmosphere for Ohio State 's Saturday night game at the Horseshoe against Virginia Tech -- an 8 p.m. ET kick on ESPN -- to be completely crazy ... so crazy fans may need to use a new program which allows fans can to text game staff members to alert them to problem fans in the stands.
One of the first things fans will notice inside the Horseshoe this year is more screaming fans. The Buckeyes took advantage of the off season and added room for 2,600 hundred new seats.
To control the extra fans, game staff members will be ready to resolve problems instantly and will let fans report issues directly to them from their smartphones. Fans can text ‘BRUTUS' to 69050 and stadium staff or police will respond to your issue. That includes fans who are misbehaving, swearing, inebriated, or who do not sit during game play. Law enforcement officers add that they want fans to report any suspicious activity.
"Swearing," yep, "inebriated," yep, but ... fans "who do not sit during game play"? Fans who stand by themselves in a whole section of seated fans during a routine 2nd-and-7 in the second quarter can be a pain, certainly but this would policy nonetheless seems to allow for those same fans to be reported for standing on a critical 3rd-and-11 with four minutes to play in the game.
The good news for Buckeye diehards: Ohio State sports information official Jerry Emig took to Twitter to refute the WBNS report and say no such policy is in place ... and do so in style:
Hey everybody: Ohio State WANTS fans to stand and cheer at Buckeye football games!— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) September 3, 2014
There is no such thing as a policy against standing at football games. So stand up and be loud and support the Buckeyes.— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) September 3, 2014
When the Buckeyes are getting ready to score, think “Get Up, Stand Up” by Bob Marley.— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) September 3, 2014
Wives and girlfriends at the game: think about Tammy Wynette's “Stand By Your Man" during the TV timeouts.— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) September 3, 2014
And guys: when you see your future Mrs. in Ohio Stadium … think “I Saw Her Standing There” by the Beatles.— Jerry Emig (@BuckeyeNotes) September 3, 2014
Well played, Mr. Emig.
