No. 10 Oregon hands No. 4 USC its worst loss since 1997

CBSSports.com wire reports

EUGENE, Ore. -- As the T-shirts worn in Oregon's student section proclaimed, it was Fright Night at Autzen Stadium.

It certainly was for Southern California.

Jeremiah Masoli threw for 222 yards and a touchdown and ran for 164 more yards with another score and the 10th-ranked Ducks trampled No. 4 Southern California 47-20 Saturday night, the Trojans' worst loss since 1997.

Thread: Trojans-Ducks

"I don't know if we made a statement, this is just what we planned on doing," Masoli said. "If it makes a statement it makes a statement. That's just Oregon football and how we roll."

Redshirt freshman LaMichael James ran for 183 yards and a score as the Ducks (7-1, 5-0 Pac-10) racked up 391 yards on the ground against the Trojans, who came into the game with the fifth-best rush defense in the nation (79.9 yards a game).

USC's defense yielded a total of 613 yards to Oregon.

"It was a real mess for us tonight," said Pete Carroll, who was handed his worst loss as coach of the Trojans. "Oregon did everything that they wanted to do."

Southern California (6-2, 3-2) had not lost a game by more than a touchdown since a 27-16 loss to Notre Dame in 2001, Carroll's first season with USC. The last time the Trojans were so soundly beaten was 1997, when they lost 35-7 to Arizona State and 27-0 to Washington.

Oregon remained alone in first and undefeated in the Pac-10. USC has won or shared the last seven Pac-10 titles. That streak is in serious jeopardy. The Trojans' run of seven straight BCS games is also in danger.

The Ducks are now poised to take the crown after stomping the longtime Kings of the West Coast.

Oregon fans were decked out in special black "Fright Night" T-shirts with a duck-and-crossbones motif to commemorate the Halloween night game - billed as the Pac-10's biggest game of the season. Afterward the fans swarmed the field, while a ring of blue-jacketed security guards circled the goal posts.

* - National Championship

The Ducks have won seven straight games since an embarrassing 19-8 loss at Boise State in the opener, a game that got uglier when running back LeGarrette Blount punched a Broncos defensive end as he was leaving the field.

Blount was suspended for the season and Oregon moved on without him. James was his replacement.

USC freshman quarterback Matt Barkley, who earlier this week predicted he would feed off Autzen's deafening noise, completed 21 of 38 passes for 187 yards and two scores. He was intercepted once.

Barkley shrugged after the loss.

"The biggest thing is realizing that there's nothing we can do about this loss," he said.

Masoli completed 19 of 31 for Oregon, which had never before scored as many points against the Trojans.

"I was as relaxed as I've ever been in my career," Masoli said. "Even me and LaMike break a couple jokes every so often. It feels great."

USC went up 3-0 on the its first series of the game on Jordan Congdon's 28-yard field goal. Oregon answered with Morgan Flint's 32-yarder, but the Ducks had squandered their opportunity after Kenjon Barner's 77-yard kickoff return.

Masoli scored on a 3-yard run to put the Ducks up 10-3 late in the first quarter. USC tied it with Barkley's 3-yard pass to Ronald Johnson early in the second.

Oregon went ahead again on Andre Crenshaw's 1-yard scoring run. And USC tied it again at 17 on Barkley's 4-yard pass to Damian Williams.

Masoli found Jamere Holland with a 17-yard touchdown pass to put the Ducks back up 24-17 at the half.

From that point, USC couldn't keep up.

After Oregon extended the lead with Flint's 35-yard field goal, USC narrowed it with Congdon's 39-yarder.

James scored on a 5-yard run and fellow redshirt freshman Kenjon Barner ran for a 3-yard touchdown to make it 41-20 at the close of the third quarter.

Flint had a pair of field goals from 22 and 23 yards out to pad Oregon's lead in the fourth quarter.

"It was just an overloaded ballgame by them. Masoli was ridiculously effective," Carroll said. "We really had our chances to make things happen but we couldn't tackle them in the backfield. the runs that he popped whether scrambles or by design just broke our back. It was a very, obviously, difficult night."

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott, who was at the game, said he planned to stay in Eugene to meet with Blount and school officials over possible reinstatement.

Scott says he'll meet with Blount, Oregon counsel, university president Richard Lariviere, athletic director Mike Bellotti and coach Chip Kelly and members of his staff.

He says the university has not made formal moves to reinstate Blount and his role "completely depends on the university and whether they want the penalty revisited."

The Trojans have lost four straight in the state of Oregon.

"It was intense," Oregon cornerback Talmadge Jackson said. "Halloween, USC, crazy night game, it was everything everyone expected it would be."

Point blank Boise State is a nothing football team. Seriously,  who besides people in Idaho even watch their games? I mean besides the opposing team? They are in a WACk conference, play one team out of conference and beat them at home, all the sudden they are supposed to command respect?
If they played in the pac 10 they would get waxed. But if they played in the pac 10 they might

The Ducks are for real, which I've known since I watched them play Penn State in the 1995 Rose Bowl.  Remember Kerry Collins at QB for PSU?  Anyway, props to all Ducks for the incredible team win over USC.  It was a 3-dimensional beat down, and a true team victory.  But Masoli is out of his gourd good.  That guy looked better than any quarterback I've ever seen in a comple ...(more)

At the beginning of every college football season there is the pre season top 25 teams. This is derived from the results of the previous year's bowl games, the results of the games and how the teams were ranked when they either won or lost.

When the season begins the polls change on a weekly basis. Teams move up or down depending on if they won or loss and who else won or loss and where

This is the worst possible outcome that there could possibly be for Boise State.

Since Oregon completely obliterated USC they are going to move up in the polls and be right on the heals of the Boise State team that beat them pretty handily at the start of the year.  The problem is....if Oregon wins out, THEY WILL BE RANKED AHEAD OF AN UNBEATAN BOISE STATE.

There I said i

Can all the so called experts now stop talking about usc being a BCS contender.  They are not even going to a BCS bowl game, much lees contend for the BCS title.  It used to be a bad loss against an inferior opponent.  Now, they had a big game on the road and got smoked.  Now I don't have to listen to the usc lovers make constant excuses why they lost and ar ...(more)

USC's loss has now opened the door for many things. Some good, some bad.

First, Bosie st, Cincy, and TCU now have a ligitiment shot at making the National Championship game. Obivously either Florida or Alabama will have one loss when it is all said and done because of the SEC championship game. So that will leave either one of those two and Texas undefeated along with the three earil

The edges man. The edges. Our DE's care more up sacks than containment. Our OLB's are smalls not larges (when will Malcolm Smith pass puberty exactly?). Our senior corners (Pinky and the S*ttty Twin) can't cover or run protect. Taylor Mays is the most overrated POS to ever don a chin strap. I would swear a kid playing Madden was controlling his movements (and trying to blow up suckers to entertain ...(more)

Funny how the AP and the Coaches polls always favor USC no matter what, Name any other team that has a loss against a team with 5 LOSSES! yet is ranked in the top 5.  You get excuses like, well the starting QB wasn't in for that game. Hmm well I always here how DEEP USC is every year because they have the best recruits EVER! So USC is so deep so awesome but if your FRESHMAN QB is out you ...(more)

Every year I get so tired of some writers and commentators talking about USC. It's always USC,USC. After USC loss a game then they became the best one loss team in the nation. Every week the talk was how USC could climb into the BCS title game and even how they could leapfrog certain teams in the polls with their one loss.

Well I guess USC is the best two loss team in the nation now. O

I bet boise state has never been happier, and frankly neither have I, finally USC goes down, i think it bs how the pollsters
always have knee pads on for the trojans. Finally oregon helped that, paving the way for a boise state or cincinatti or a TCU
to move up. USC was unfairly ranked ahead of those teams, i mean seriously this squad lost to a washington team who didnt

I don't understand why Blount deserves such prominent mention in the recap of the USC-Oregon game. I get why the fact he may return to play might merit a story in and of itself, but as far as I could tell, Blount had absolutely nothing to do with the Oregon victory. Let the recap story live in the game that just happened and celebrate the players (for both sides) who worked so hard. Thanks, Oregon ...(more)

Watching USC these past 3 weeks has demonstrated that Pete Carroll has finally come down to earth and has failed miserably as a coach this year.  SC has always demonstarted the aptitude for playing tight defense each year, but the past 3 weeks, SC defense is no where to be found.  I will give credit to each of the opponents, but Caroll has failed miserably this year and hope this past de ...(more)

Apparently USC gave up 47 points to Oregon and 36 points to Oregon St LAST YEAR.  (It says both games were in 2008 [it's 2009]).  I hate when I'm on a site that is supposed to be proof-read and of at least medium quality, but oh well.  I shall always find stupid little errors.  How embarrassing.

Where are the USC fans now? They are always saying how damn good their team is. Well, you have two loses now. I am sure you will talk about how much you still deserve to be in the NC game right? WRONG! USC is overrated, and always has been overrated. The SEC has won the last three NC games and will continue to dominated. Oregon might deserve a shot with only one loss. Lets hear it USC fans. You ha ...(more)

When the rankings get released tomorrow, Oregon will be several spots ahead of an undefeated Boise State squad that not only beat them this year, but manhandled them, holding them without a first down until the third quarter of that contest.  Don't get me wrong, Oregon is playing some darn good football right now, and may well be one of the best teams in the country.  But they're also th ...(more)
