Midshipmen sink Irish hopes of reaching BCS bowl

CBSSports.com wire reports

SOUTH BEND, Ind.-- Navy's second consecutive victory at Notre Dame Stadium didn't produce the same euphoria for the Midshipmen as the last one.

Just another win as far Navy was concerned -- though this loss to the Midshipmen was much more costly for Notre Dame.

Craig Schaefer sacked Jimmy Clausen in the end zone with 60 seconds left Saturday and Navy held on for a 23-21 victory, its second in three seasons against the 19th-ranked Fighting Irish.

"I wanted to run on the field and jump up and down, but I was kind of tired," said linebacker Ram Vela, who had an interception and fumble recovery. "We'd done it before and we went into this game not really placing as much emphasis or too much importance on it. We just treated it like another game."

Two years ago when Navy beat Notre Dame, the Irish were in the midst of a 3-9 season. The loss Saturday effectively ends any hope Notre Dame (6-3) had for its first Bowl Championship Series appearance since 2006.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said he believed media speculation about Notre Dame chasing a BCS berth, along with the Irish playing at No. 14 Pittsburgh (8-1) next week, helped the Midshipmen.

"We kind of felt like we had them in a perfect storm. Just looking to the postseason, a very, very good Pitt team coming next week, and it's us coming," he said.

The last time an unranked Navy team beat a ranked Notre Dame team was 1936, the first year of the poll, when the Midshipmen won 3-0. Ranked Notre Dame teams had beat unranked Navy 41 straight times.

It's the type of loss that will no doubt fire up the critics of Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis.

"That comes with the territory. The sad part of that is that's this job every week," said Weis, who is 35-24 in five season at Notre Dame. "It's a week-to-week deal."

Notre Dame (6-3) scored with 24 seconds left on a 31-yard pass from Jimmy Clausen to Golden Tate to cut the lead to two, but the ensuing onside kick went out of bounds.

"I love playing in South Bend," safety Wyatt Middleton said. "I love playing here."

The Midshipmen, who now go to the Texas Bowl, said the win two years ago helped them believe they could do it again. Vela said the biggest difference was the defense played better.

"Everyone put their all into it and rose to the occasion," Vela said. "I think that's what separates this game from the last time we best them."

Ricky Dobbs threw a 52-yard touchdown pass and ran for another, and fullback Vince Murray added a 25-yard TD run for Navy to lead the Midshipmen to consecutive wins in South Bend for the first time since 1961 and 1963.

Navy outrushed the Irish -- playing without leading rusher Armando Allen Jr. because of an ankle injury -- 348 yards to 60. Murray ran for 158 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries, becoming the first Navy running back to rush for 100 yards for four straight games since Napoleon McCallum in 1983.

Dobbs, who played only seven plays in the last two games because of a knee injury, added 102 yards on 31 carries and completed 2 of 3 for 56 yards.

Clausen was 37 of 57 yards passing for 452 yards, all career highs. The 37 completions are a school record and the yardage is the fourth best in school history. Heisman Trophy-worthy numbers, but with Notre Dame down a touchdown and less than a two minutes left, Clausen was sacked on consecutive plays. The last one gave Navy its final two points and all but sealed the victory.

"It's a heartbreaking loss," Clausen said.

Michael Floyd, playing his first game after breaking his collarbone in September, matched his career high with 10 catches for 141 yards. Tate had nine catches for 132 yards.

The Irish managed to cut the lead to 21-14 when Floyd caught a 12-yard TD pass from Clausen with 4:46 left in the game. The game appeared over when Schaefer sacked Clausen with 60 seconds left. But Tate recovered the onside kick by Nick Tausch to give the Irish once last chance and they converted it for a score, but they will lament the points they left behind.

Tausch, who had made a school-record 14 straight field goals, missed a 41-yard attempt wide left and a 30-yard try wide right. The Irish also had a fumble at the goal line and an interception at the 5.

"It came down to red-zone production for us," Weis said. "Getting the ball down into position to score was not the issue; it was scoring that was the issue."

I mean really, they took Ohio State to the limit, gave Pitt all they wanted and have been tough all year. They run the hard to defend triple option offense and hit the holes hard and fast today. Sorry ND fans Navy is a better team (and better coached). Relax, this will bring the Weis era one step closer to being over.

Great Job Navy!

This defensive scheme has failed.  The Irish were better defensively under Coach Brown.  Tenuta's focus on blitzes and schemes is taking away from playing lanes and solid tackling.  I've played and watched football since I was a kid and the way to defend the option is disciplined defense, players playing their lanes and making the qb pitch the ball... Navy got to the edge all day.&n ...(more)

The O line will be replacing some seniors next year and we have already seen Charlie's ability to coach the O line. I don't think Jimmy wants to go thru that again and would expect him to try and go pro. You can count on Tate going and I wouldn't be suprised to see Floyd trying to go as well. The D is awful so unless we can schedule games against the bottom feeders like Troy, Charle ...(more)

Notre Dame in a BCS bowl?!?!?  What a joke that would be.  The players are soft, the coaching is deficient, and the program is strictly second tier.  Sure, they have some pretty athletes, but they sure don't have many football players.

They play a full season of exhibition games and pretend they mean something.  Ask any Big Ten athlete when the 'real s

Under Charlie Weis, Notre Dame A&M stands for Notre Dame - Arrogant and Mediocre.  Nice schematic advantage his teams carry onto the field every Saturday.  Sure Jimmy Clausen is a Heisman Candidate (not).  What are you guys paying Weis - $4.5 million a year or so.  Nice decision.  The rest of the college football world is laughing at this program week after week.& ...(more)

Brash, I know, but it seems true.

Back in the day Notre Dame definitely was an unstoppable power house who struck fear in all of their opponents. Recently, however they have not been as dominating. Growing up, the younger folk, myself included, never witnessed that dominance. Miami, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Florida (recently) are the "elite" teams.

Times change and

Don't assume anything.  That's how ND ended up with Weis in the first place.  They canned Ty assuming Urban would jump at the chance.  ND doesn't mean what it once did.  The last time ND won a National Championship, FSU and Miami were just entering the National picture, the ACC and Big East didn't exist,  the SEC consisted of Alabama(Georgia to an extent), Texas  ...(more)

As a die-hard Notre Dame I will be the first to admit we didn't deserve a top 25 ranking. We have more talent than 11 out of the 12 teams on our schedule.  We will likely end up at least one more loss.  The only one to point the finger to is the coach.  Charlie cannot develop offensive talent and is only a decent offensive coach.  It pains me to see us lose to Navy again, but o ...(more)

Yep, it's time for Notre Dame to fire Charlie Weis.  He's a fraud, he's a fake, and an incompetent buffoon who lacks a signature win.  His coaching is unacceptable, his sense of urgency is baffling, and as usual my beloved Irish are again overrated, and rightfully so.

I'm one of the biggest ND fans ever, but I'm done supporting this team until some real changes are made.&nbs

ND is a team that was once the NY Yankees of college football.  Now, they are the Pittsburgh Pirates, they couldn't matter less.  Yet, the media still gives them Yankkee's face time.  Please stop ESPN, CBS, et al.  It is annoying to have a mediocre team shoved in our faces every year, with the same lame outcomes so completely predictable.  ND is like guy at work that does ...(more)

I am a Notre Dame grad and die hard fan.  I have nothing left in the tank arguing with people about Weis or the program.  I was at the game today, it was an abomination.  2 losses to Navy in 3 years.  Hats off to the Midshippmen for a gutty performance but there is no reason to lose to Navy.  Notre Dame has 85 scholarship athletes; half of which are 4 and 5 star rated.&nbs ...(more)

You'll go 8-4 and lose a bowl game you don't deserve to be in.  However, you'll be rank 5th next year when the season starts.

LOL, what a pathetic program!

The Irish had no hope of reaching a BCS game this year!  They didn't deserve the last one they got.  What have they done? Win 1 bowl game against Hawaii!  Come on!  I have more respect for Boise and TCU than I do for The Choking Irish.  They lose to a mediocre Michigan - pull out miniscule victories at Mich ST.,Purdue,Boston College,Washington.  Where is the elite com ...(more)

-I believe Iowa's 9th and final life got spent when Stanzi got nuc'd in the 1st half.  They are still however, an under-ratedfotball team.. f Stanzi is healthy.

-I believe Penn State got exposed yesterday by a better team.  The Lions NEED to get their offensive line in order and DC needs to make better decisions out there.  Domination by the Buckeye's.  Play like tha
