TROY, Ala. (AP) Carl Meadows passed for 213 yards and a touchdown and Troy opened its season with a strong defensive outing in beating Cal Poly 27-10 Saturday.

Troy held Cal Poly to 139 total yards, including 68 yards passing on 15 attempts, as the Trojans held on after building an early 17-0 lead.

Joel Whinghter had 12 carries for 65 yards and a 15-yard first-quarter touchdown. Kenny Cattouse added 23 yards rushing with a 4-yard scoring run that gave Troy a 17-0 lead in the opening period.

Cal Poly answered with 10 points in the second quarter but was shut out in the second half.

Cal Poly converted only one of 12 third-down plays.

Matt Brennan led I-AA Cal Poly with 10 carries for only 33 yards.

Meadows completed 14 of 31 passes for Troy, throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to Gary Banks in the fourth quarter.

Banks led Troy with five receptions for 63 yards.

Troy (1-0) plays host to Alabama-Birmingham next Saturday night.
