MOREHEAD, Ky. (AP) -Morehead State quarterback Evan Sawyer ran for one touchdown and threw for another in his first college start as the Eagles defeated Southern Virginia 42-16 on Saturday night.
Sawyer topped all rushers with 63 yards on 10 carries while through the air he finished 10 of 20 for 131 yards.
Sawyer scored on a 13-yard run with 2:48 left in the first period and led to Morehead State (1-0) scoring the game?s first 41 points. He later hooked up for a 30-yard scoring pass to Nick Feldman.
Southern Virginia, an NAIA school, got its only points on an 80-yard pass from quarterback Luke Taylor to Tye Hiatt in the 4th quarter.
Morehead State finished the game with 439 in total offense ? 306 rushing and 133 passing. Southern Virginia (0-1) finished with 35 yards rushing and 111 passing for a total of 146.
