Southeast Missouri State at Purdue

    Purdue 59, SE Missouri 0

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - About all Southeast Missouri State took from its 59-0 loss at Purdue on Saturday was a paycheck.

"They have 85 scholarships and we have 63," Southeast coach Tony Samuel said. "This is a money game."

The Boilermakers rushed for 393 yards and had 627 yards of total offense, compared to 153 for Football Championship Subdivision member Southeast Missouri State (0-2).

"We played a pretty good team, I just feel like we were outmatched," SEMO safety Bryan Blanfort said.

Purdue (2-1) registered its first shutout since a 51-0 win over Syracuse on Sept. 5, 2004, and allowed under 200 yards for the first time since playing Ball State on Sept. 11, 2004.

"We just didn't execute," SEMO quarterback Matt Scheible said. "We got to a couple third downs where we were just a yard away from a first down and we didn't get it. And it's just a snowball effect with mistakes."

Scheible passed for 61 yards, and Levi Terrell led the Redhawks with 33 yards rushing. The Redhawks were held to nine first downs and averaged just 2.5 yards per play.

"We were unable to generate any offense," Samuel said. "It will be important to get it going with conference play coming up."

Carson Wiggs started the scoring with a 19-yard field goal to give Purdue a 3-0 lead.

Akeem Shavers scored on an 8-yard run up the middle to make it 10-0 with 5:45 left in the first quarter. He scored on a 1-yard run before the end of the quarter to give the Boilermakers a 17-0 lead. Purdue outgained the Redhawks 225 yards to 18 in the first quarter, as Shavers had eight carries for 55 yards and two touchdowns.

Ralph Bolden's 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter gave the Boilermakers a 24-0 lead.

Purdue quarterback Robert Marve entered the game with 8:46 left in the second quarter, his first appearance since going down early last season with a torn ACL in his left knee. He led the Boilermakers to a touchdown on his first possession, a 5-yard pass to O.J. Ross. He went 5-for-5 for 59 yards on his first series.

Bolden scored again on the next possession, this time on a 6-yard run that pushed the lead to 38-0 with 1:28 left in the first half.

Purdue gained 396 yards in the first half and held Southeast Missouri State to 57.

The Redhawks offense started just one play in the first half on Purdue's side of the field.

Purdue scored on its first possession of the second half when Antavian Edison broke loose for a 15-yard touchdown run. Freshman running back Akeem Hunt scored on his first career carry in the fourth quarter as Purdue pushed its lead to 52-0. Hunt scored again on a 3-yard run to finish the scoring.

For the game, Shavers ran for 75 yards, Bolden 57 and Hunt 56.

"I think we got tired as a defense," Blanfort said. "That should not be our excuse since we've been training since January. That should be something that is nonexistent right now."

Purdue gained momentum heading into its Oct. 1 game against Notre Dame.

"We played about as well as we thought we could have," Purdue coach Danny Hope said. "Our goal coming in this week was two things: we wanted to get better and we wanted to win."
