Ex-Sooners QB Bomar leads Sam Houston State to win in Division I-AA debut

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- Former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar threw for one touchdown and ran for another Thursday night as Sam Houston State defeated Angelo State 17-13 in the season opener for both teams.

Bomar was playing his first game since being kicked off the Sooner football team just before the 2006 season for accepting payment for more work than he performed at a car dealership, a violation of NCAA rules. He transferred to Sam Houston State and sat out a year.

He completed 16 of 24 passes for 204 yards with one interception and had eight carries for 24 yards. Bomar hit Justin Wells on a 64-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter as the Bearkats took a 7-0 lead. He scored on an 8-yard run with 2:15 left in the first half as Sam Houston State, a member of the Football Championship Subdivision, took a 17-0 lead.

Sam Tindol returned a fumble 33 yards for a touchdown late in the first half to get NCAA Division II Angelo State on the scoreboard. Brad Holcombe kicked two field goals in the third quarter to make it 17-13.

Angelo State had two chances to win the game late in the fourth. Josh Neiswander's couldn't hit Tindol in the end zone on fourth down. Angelo State got the ball back after one series by the Bearkats and Neiswander again couldn't find Tindol.

Neiswander went 11-of-22 for 182 yards. Daniel Thomas rushed for 102 yards on 31 carries.
