Either Jim Leavitt wisely ran it up on Central Florida or South Florida is that good.
Maybe both, which is another way of saying prepare for one more shocker when the first BCS standings are released later Sunday.
South Florida could be No. 2 in the BCS behind Ohio State. So could Boston College or LSU, but those schools have decades of traditions and wins behind them. Leavitt's Bulls demolished Central Florida 64-12 Saturday to remain unbeaten in only their 11th year of existence. That was as solid a result as there could be on another strange day. South Florida started the day No. 4 in Jerry Palm's BCS which historically has replicated the official standings.
Now, with the latest rash of upsets -- No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Cal both lost -- why not South Florida moving up into the prized No. 2 BCS spot?
"It really depends on what the voters do with USF," Palm said. "Ohio State is No. 1. That's all that is certain about it."
Will voters be impressed enough with the Bulls? They came into the day No. 5 in the coaches' poll and No. 6 in the Harris poll. They were .0010 of a point in front of Boston College at No. 4 in the BCS. BC was No. 4 in both polls, No. 5 in the BCS.
Halfway through the season (seven weeks down, seven to go) 11 of the top 12 teams in the AP preseason poll have lost at least once. Only No. 11 Ohio State has stayed undefeated.
The Buckeyes are joined by five other undefeateds at this point: South Florida, BC, Arizona State, Kansas and Hawaii.
Incredibly, BC, Hawaii and South Florida all share the nation's longest winning streak now at eight games.
