Miami and the Orange Bowl: Top 10 games

With Miami playing its final game in the Orange Bowl this weekend against Virginia (the Hurricanes will move to Dolphin Stadium for 2008), it's time to reflect on some of the most memorable games the Hurricanes have been a part of in the O.B.

The Orange Bowl was was built by the City of Miami Public Works Department and was originally named Burdine Stadium after Roddy Burdine, one of Miami's pioneers.

This list was compiled by votes from CBSSports.com staff, writers and producers.

1. Miami 31, Nebraska 30 (Jan. 2, 1984): Down by seven in the final minute of the game, Nebraska coverted a 4th down for a touchdown to get within an extra point of a tie. Nebraska's Tom Osborne decided to go for two, but quarterback Turner Gill's pass was knocked down by Kenny Calhoun, giving Miami the upset. The national championship wasn't official until the next day, but because No. 2 Texas lost in the Cotton Bowl, No. 4 Illinois lost in the Rose Bowl and No. 3 Auburn had an unimpressive win in the Sugar Bowl, Miami jumped to No. 1, earning its first national title.

2. Boston College 47, Miami 45 (Nov. 23, 1984): In one of the greatest finishes in sports history, Boston College's Doug Flutie threw a "Hail Mary" from his own 37-yard line into the end zone, which was caught by Gerard Phelan as time expired. Flutie went on to win the Heisman Trophy.

3. Miami 19, Florida State 16 (Wide Right II, Oct. 3, 1992): Of all the classic Miami-Florida State games, this one was the most intense. The Hurricanes entered with a 20-game winning streak and found themselves trailing 16-10 in the fourth quarter. Gino Torretta engineered a 58-yard drive for Miami, capping it with a 33-yard touchdown to Lamar Thomas. After a safety gave Miami a 19-16 lead, the Seminoles had one final chance with 1:33 left. With eight seconds left, Dan Mowrey's 39-yad field goal sailed wide right.

4. Miami 28, Oklahoma 16 (Sept. 27, 1986): This game was hyped as the "Game of the Century" because Oklahoma came in as the defending national champions and ranked No. 1, while Miami was No. 2. It also featured Oklahoma star linebacker Brian "The Boz" Bosworth vs. Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde. Miami had a 7-3 lead at halftime, but Testaverde took over in the second half, finishing with 261 yards and four touchdowns, two to Michael Irvin.

5. Miami 49, UCLA 45 (Dec. 5, 1998): In a game that was originally scheduled in September, it ended up being postponed because of Hurricane Georges. The game became so much more important had it been played earlier in the season because UCLA was 10-1 and sitting at No. 3 in the AP poll. Edgerrin James finished with 299 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 50 seconds left, giving Miami the upset. Many thought Miami had no chance to win the game because it was coming off a 66-13 loss to Syracuse a week earlier.

6. Miami 20, Oklahoma 14 (Jan. 1, 1988): Oklahoma's hopes for a second national championship in three years were shattered by Miami, which claimed its first under Jimmy Johnson and second in school history. Oklahoma came into the game averaging 429 yards rushing, but was held to just 179 on a defense that featured current head coach Randy Shannon. It was only the Sooners third loss in the last three seasons, all of which had come to the Hurricanes.

7. Miami 27, Notre Dame 10 (Nov. 25, 1989): It was a matchup between two of the best teams in the late 1980s, but it will forever be known for one play -- 3rd and 44. After a personal foul call and a 23-yard loss by quarterback Craig Erickson, Miami faced the tremendous third down from its own 3. Erickson completed a long pass to Randall Hill for the first down, extending what turned out to be a 10-minute drive. "I didn't use any moves. I just ran," said Hill, who ran a 4.3 40-yard dash.

8. Miami 31, Florida State 0 (Sept. 3, 1988): In the first game of the season, the Seminoles came in as the preseason No. 1 with a loaded team that included All-American Deion Sanders and running back Sammie Smith. Miami's defense did everything right, pressuring Chip Ferguson into two interceptions. Sammie Smith, who had 189 yards rushing the year before against the Hurricanes, finished with 6 yards on 10 carries. "I had nightmares about this game during the summer," Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said the next morning. "They weren't as bad as this. We got whipped every way you can think of."

9. Washington 38, Miami 20 (Sept. 24, 1994): It only made No. 9 on this list, but is probably the biggest upsets in Washington history as the Huskies came into the Orange Bowl and ended Miami's 58-game home winning streak. Dubbed "The Whammy in Miami", the Huskies scored 25 points in the third quarter, ignited by a 75-yard screen pass from Damon Huard to Richard Thomas. Three plays later, Russell Hairston returned an interception 34 yards for a touchdown to put Washington ahead to stay. "I'm ashamed," Miami receiver Chris T. Jones said. "I'll have to look the former 'Canes and coaches in the eye and know that my class is known as the class that lost the streak. I'll have to live with that."

10. Florida 45, Miami 16 (Nov. 27, 1971): Florida dominated the game from start to finish and led 45-8 with 1:20 remaining. Florida's John Reaves needed 14 yards to break Jim Plunkett's all-time NCAA career passing record, so with Miami driving toward the end zone the Gators defense dropped to the ground and allowed Miami to score. The Gators recovered the onside kick and Reaves broke the record with a 15-yard pass to Carlos Alvarez.

Honorable Mention

Maryland 42, Miami 40 (Nov. 10, 1984): The sixth-ranked Hurricanes led 31-0 at halftime against the unranked Terrapins, but quarterback Frank Reich led what was then the greatest comeback in NCAA history. Reich was close to perfect in the second half, completing 12-of-15 for 260 yards with three touchdown passes and another rushing.

Miami 27, Florida State 24 (Oct. 7, 2000): Ken Dorsey led a late 73-yard drive that ended with a 13-yard touchdown to Jeremy Shockey, giving the Hurricanes the three-point lead. The Seminoles had one final chance, getting in range for a 49-yard field goal attempt by Matt Munyon on the final play. The kick is forever knows as "Wide Right III."

Miami 65, Washington 7 (Nov. 24, 2001): Not only was this game payback for the 1994 game, but Miami had also lost at Washington 34-29 in 2000. The Huskies came into the game ranked No. 12, but were run off the field as future NFL RBs Clinton Portis, Najeh Davenport and Frank Gore all scored touchdowns.

Miami 28, Florida State 27 (Oct. 12, 2002): In another memorable game between the rivals, it ended with a late touchdown drive by Ken Dorsey. The Seminoles once again had a chance to kick a field goal on the final play, but this time Xavier Beitia's 43-yard kick missed "Wide Left."

Miami 38, Florida 33 (Sept. 6, 2003): Down 33-18 late in the third quarter, the Hurricanes scored four straight touchdowns to rally and beat freshman Chris Leak and the Gators. Brock Berlin overcame two interceptions, a fumble returned for a touchdown and a terrible start to go 27-for-41 for 340 yards and earn a win in his first home start.

Miami 41, Louisville 38 (Oct. 14, 2004): Brock Berlin threw for 308 yards, including a game-winning drive in the final minute as Miami rallied from 17 points down to defeat the Cardinals.

Miami 35, Florida International 0 (Oct. 14, 2006): The first game between the two-Miami area schools included a bench-clearing brawl that ended with 32 players -- 19 from FIU, 13 from Miami -- being suspended at least one game.
