GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Former Florida football player Jamar Hornsby was charged with four misdemeanors for using the credit card of a dead woman, the state attorney's office said.
Hornsby, a former safety, was arrested by the Alachua County Sheriff's office in May on charges that he used the dead woman's gas card for six months.
The woman, also a Florida student, was killed along with another player in a motorcycle accident. Hornsby, 21, was kicked off the team after he turned himself in after a judge issued a warrant for his arrest in May.
The state attorney's office said prosecutors charged Hornsby on Monday with the unauthorized use of a credit card on the following dates: Nov. 2, 2007, Jan. 14, March 6 and April 24.
If convicted, Hornsby faces up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine on each charge.
Hornsby's lawyer, Huntley Johnson, said his client will plead not guilty and that he believes that there will be a resolution to the case without a trial.
Johnson said Hornsby is playing football at East Mississippi Junior College.
According to Alachua County jail records, Hornsby was charged with larceny of a credit card and fraudulent-illegal use of a credit card to obtain goods or services of more than $100 in May, all felonies. At the time, Hornsby was accused of charging about $3,000.
