ECU monitors Hanna, but rescheduling WVU game is 'last resort'

By | CBSSports.com Senior Writer

Rescheduling the West Virginia-East Carolina game on Saturday would be a "last resort," according to Pirates AD Terry Holland.

East Carolina is expecting to host No. 8 West Virginia as scheduled as Tropical Storm Hanna bears down on the Carolinas. The game, one of the biggest in East Carolina history, is set for 4:30 p.m. ET. Hanna is expected to develop into a hurricane and strike the Southeastern U.S. this weekend.

Holland said by e-mail late Wednesday that rescheduling the game, "is not on the radar screen." There are no apparent common bye weeks between the two teams.

"While we are monitoring and making all sorts of contingency plans," Holland wrote, "finding a common week to play the game later is not on the radar screen. That would be the last resort after all other options would be exhausted ..."

The game at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is a sellout. Greenville, N.C., is in the eastern part of the state, approximately 90 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean. The brunt of the storm is expected to hit northern South Carolina and eastern North Carolina late Friday through early Saturday, according to information posted by The Weather Channel.

The Greenville forecast for Saturday is a high of 82 with rain and wind.

Officials at Florida and Miami continue to monitor Hanna. The Gainesville forecast this weekend, though, seems promising. As of Thursday morning, the forecast is partly cloudy and 87 on Friday, sunny and 92 on Saturday.

LSU and Troy have already rescheduled Saturday's game in Baton Rouge in the aftermath of Hurricane Gustav.
