Fulmer chooses not to accept salary position at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Former coach Phillip Fulmer will be an alumni volunteer instead of a special assistant to University of Tennessee president John Petersen.

Petersen says Fulmer has decided against the special assistant job that was announced by the university on Monday. Fulmer would have been hired for three months with a privately funded salary of $37,500 to assist with fundraising and outreach efforts.

The announcement Friday comes just days after faculty at the Knoxville campus complained about Fulmer's appointment. Layoffs of non-tenured track faculty are being considered to meet up to $75 million in state funding cuts.
