Decade rankings 111-120: New Mexico State bottom of barrel

Baseball in the 1920s. The NFL in the 1960s. The NBA during his Airness.

Golden ages, all of them, for those sports. You are living that time right now in college football. A case can be made: This decade has been the most entertaining, controversial, innovative and, well, greatest in the sport's history.

Offense is up across the board. The BCS makes us pull our hair out. Notre Dame is up, then down. Since 2000, LSU and Florida both had twice as many titles this decade than all the previous decades combined. The most significant play of the decade might be the old hook-and-ladder pulled by a former Episcopalian nursing school.

This golden decade is the theme of our ramp up to the 2009 season. As a lead-in to our preseason coverage, CBSSports.com will rank each Division I-A program based on its performance this decade, over the next few weeks.

That's No. 1 to No. 120, best to worst, in reverse order. We'll highlight one program in each file. We have our opinions. We're sure you'll have yours. Don't be afraid to weigh in.

We start with Nos. 111-120.

120. New Mexico State: As many coaches as conferences (three each) since 2000. The Aggies have posted only four winning seasons since 1967. Tony Samuel, who coached two of those seasons, was fired after 2004. And the program isn't exactly digging out of the muck. New Mexico State has won 11 games since a winless season in 2005. Hal Mumme tried his luck in Las Cruces after leaving I-AA Southeastern Louisiana in 2005. His Aggies teams put up a bunch of yards but won only 11 games in four seasons. What lands this program in last place is the upside. There isn't much of one. New Mexico State is clearly over its head in the WAC. This was a curious place for UCLA defensive coordinator Dewayne Walker to land. He could have done better for his first head coaching job. Coaches don't leave Las Cruces and get better jobs -- their careers die there.

119. Western Kentucky: Division I-A's newest member was the 2002 I-AA national champ. Unlike No. 120, the commitment is there to grow the program. Its 511 victories would rank 26th all-time in I-A.

118. Idaho: The program produced one of the best football book's of all-time (Hall of Famer Jerry Kramer's Instant Replay). Unfortunately, the actual football is at an all-time low. Entering its 14th season in I-A, the Vandals haven't had a winning season since 1999.

117. SMU: Still feeling the effects of the death penalty more than two decades later. The Mustangs are coming off consecutive 1-11 seasons.

116. Florida International: Where is the money going? The Panthers took a $700,000 check to play at Iowa last year but can't afford a marching band or cheerleaders?

115. Army: One of the biggest mysteries of the universe is why Navy and Air Force can win, but Army can't. Rich Ellerson becomes the fifth coach since 2003.

114. Temple: Kicked to the curb by the Big East, the Owls are showing signs of life. After a dreadful decade, one dreamer has picked them to win the MAC East.

113. Duke: So far, the Blue Devils have posted the worst record in I-A this decade (14-90). In David Cutcliffe's second season there is reason for hope.

112. Eastern Michigan: Misery loves company. Only nine miles separate Eastern Michigan and Michigan and their 3-9 records in 2008.

111. Utah State: Ute Magic? Utah defensive coordinator Gary Anderson becomes the Aggies' fifth coach since 1997.

As a Sooner fan, I think we are in the top 10, maybe even top 5...but I have to say that USC is number 1.

My top 10

1. USC- Two titles(one split championship) and have been in the thick of things almost every year since 2002

2. Florida- Tough choice, but thier championship teams have been better than LSU's.

3. LSU- Two titles and have been solid ...(more)

usually win.   Florida, Ohio Statea and Texas are the top 3.  Money talks  NMSU's football budget is minescule.

Texas and Florida are also tops in the number of football players arrested - they both seem to average about  5 players a year. I hadn't checked Ohio State.

Some schools like Cal attract smart players because of their top academics

Grantred that the MAC is not the Big East, but with the highest rated recruiting classes over the last 3 seasons in the league, to rank the Owls, at 114 out of 120 is foolish on the part of the alledged authority who put this together.
Since the arrival of Al Golden, the Owls have improved each year, amd in the 2008 season, should have gone bowling. They had a lost to U  Conn o

NMSU is a joke.  They are on probation from the NCAA for not even being able to have enough home fans to remain a Division 1 team!

The Las Cruces newspaper last week had an article wondering why local players won't stay and play for NMSU.  I mean seriously?  It's because NMSU is the single worst football program in Division 1!

NMSU needs to drop D1 football

How in the world did two teams get below the Idaho Van-dulls????  They still don't have a Division 1-A facility to play at!!!! They have a run down airplane hangar with turf where inbreeders go to get away from there mother-wives....Washington State needs to move to Spokane to get that U of Idaho stink off of them....they are starting to lose like Idaho...as always go Broncos!!!!!!  Let' ...(more)

Where is the door mat of the Pac 10 the Washington Huskies? They have ended this decade on quite the roll, er...... I mean slide. Here's to another perfect season if they can slide by Idaho at home.

Who is in the top 10 or even top 5??, I'm a Buckeye fan, yes the team that has been spanked 2 times in a row in the Championship game. The LSU game was a home game for LSU, it was in the Superdome, tell me how many times LSU has lost a Bowl game there? The Buckeyes have been to 3 Championship games this Decade with 1 win, I think the Buckeyes without doubt belong in the top 10 for the Decade, maybe ...(more)

Keep it up.  This is just what the NCAA and BCS want, heated discussions about teams' greatness with no real measuring stick.  No offense to the Florida fans and other BCS winners, but comparing greatness without a real championship is like comparing high school champions from different states or boxers from different decades.  It's fun to talk about, creates a lot of heated barroom ...(more)

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO ARMY!?!?! I live in NY and have gone to a few games at West Point. They're really fun except Army never wins! They use to be a powerhouse back in the day. Can you believe they use to produce Heisman winners?!

on a side note... wow FIU can't afford cheerleaders and a band?! pathetic! how can a Florida school be bad? All the talent down there

Although there is a vocal contingent of parents who fervently believe that cheerleading is a sport, it's not.  Nor is it necessary to any sporting program outside of a high school.  No one, and I mean no one, looks to a cheerleader for inspiration or instructions for when to cheer, how and how loudly.  Cheerleaders in college and pro sports are mainly there for calendars ...(more)

I understand that LSU, USC, Oklahoma, and maybe Ohio State or Miami have arguments, but here is the case:

1.)Florida: 2 outright national titles (with perhaps a third on its way), 2006 and 2008, number 8 in winning percentage, and a winning record against all four teams above it in the win percentage category

By comparison:

How did San Diego State University not make this low on the list? They have had 3 coaches in the last 10 years, all with totally different styles, all equally abysmal. Go Aztecs!

Already, people in Baton Rouge, Gainesville and on Century Blvd in LA are sending in their drafts for editors to review on their arguments for the final installment of this series.

Dodd, I don't mind wading (waiting?) through this muck at the bottom in order to build the suspense, but how 'bout having some fun with it? Give us a little comedy since I doubt you will find many arguments b
