Mountain West extends contract with commissioner Thompson

HENDERSON, Nev. -- The Mountain West has extended its contract with commissioner Craig Thompson through the summer of 2012.

Thompson has been in charge since the conference formed in October 1998 before beginning play in 1999.

He led the conference to propose a playoff system to the BCS after a season in which conference champion Utah was the only undefeated team in major college football, but did not get a chance to play for the national title.
