Ducks' Blount could be reinstated for final four games -- if Pac-10 approves

EUGENE, Ore. -- Running back LeGarrette Blount could be reinstated to Oregon's football team this season if he meets certain conditions, coach Chip Kelly said.

"It's not a football decision, it's a human being decision. It's about that individual," Kelly said Friday. "And he's got a lot of things he's got to do."

Blount was suspended for punching Boise State's Byron Hout in the aftermath of Oregon's 19-8 season-opening loss to the Broncos. The suspension banned him from games, but Blount was allowed to remain on scholarship and practice with the team.

Kelly said he set down academic, behavior and football-related "ladders" that Blount must achieve for possible reinstatement, but he did not provide specifics. Academics could not be addressed earlier because classes had not started.

Blount signed an agreement outlining the requirements last week.

Should Blount meet the conditions, the earliest he could return to the team is Oregon's Nov. 7 game at Stanford -- and there is no guarantee that he would be allowed back at that time, if at all.

"There's a distinct possibility he'll never play football here again," Kelly said. "But the ball is in LeGarrette's court."

If and when Blount meets the conditions, Oregon will have to appeal to the Pacific-10 Conference to reduce the original discipline.

"The power to reinstate rests with the Conference, and if and when the university decides to make such an appeal, the Conference will take the matter under advisement and make a decision," commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement.

Blount could not be reached for comment on Friday. Following his suspension, he was told not to speak to the media.

Kelly said he reached out to sociologist Harry Edwards and former NFL coach Tony Dungy before revising the conditions of Blount's suspension.

The university said in a statement that athletic director Mike Bellotti and President Richard Lariviere had been involved in the process.

Blount punched Hout, dropping him to his knees, following the Ducks' Sept. 3 game with the Broncos on national television.

Kelly suspended Blount for the rest of the season the next day. Because he is a senior, the suspension effectively ended his college career.

On Thursday, the university newspaper published a letter of apology from Blount. In it, he offered his "sincerest apologies and heartfelt regrets."

"On a personal note, I probably will never be able to erase the memories of the post-game events of that day. Given this, I do not expect to be given a second chance to be a positive and responsible member of the football program and of this community," Blount said in the letter to the editor.

"Going forward, what I hope for is the opportunity to show that I am able to earn a second chance as a University student. And if I am so fortunate, I believe that I also will demonstrate that I am a better man and a better human being for having lived through this unfortunate experience."

It was Blount's first public comment since an apology to reporters immediately following the Boise State game.

Blount and Kelly called Boise State coach Chris Petersen and Hout soon after the suspension to apologize. Kelly said Friday that the call was Blount's idea.

There has been support for Blount among some of Oregon's fans. Students at last weekend's 42-3 upset of California at Autzen Stadium were seen wearing "Free Blount" T-Shirts.

Blount, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound transfer from East Mississippi Community College, rushed for 1,002 yards and a school-record 17 touchdowns last season.

Oregon has won three straight games since the loss to the Broncos. The No. 16 Ducks host Washington State on Saturday.

After the Boise State game I was not impressed with Oregon at all and said so in this medium.  I would like to apologize to the Oregon program, players, and fans for being so hard on them after that first game.  The team could have fallen apart from the loss and what happened after the game.  I give a lot of credit to the coaching staff and the players for rebounding after that firs ...(more)

I would look more favorably on Oregon if Chip Kelly would have offered a mea culpa, as well as Blunt.  Where is his apology for 1:  Not preparing his team better, especially not preparing Blount for all possibilties given the focus on his "trash-talk.?"  Where is Kelly's apology for 2:  Overreacting by suspending Blount for the season, before examining all the v ...(more)

The Ducks are not bringing Blount because they beat Cal. Did anyone listen to Chip Kelly's interview? Did anyone see the game against Cal WITHOUT Blount? Your easy reasoning of Oregon bringing him back for a bowl shot is completly irrational. They WHOOPED Cal without him. They won 3 games in a row without him. Get it clear Duck Haters, Oregon has only played better without him. Even if they did ...(more)

Media outlets such as ESPN continue to promote trash talking as cool and hip.  The fact of the matter is that it goes against everything that sports is supposed to be about.  And the trash talking led to the incident here.  I think the Boise State player who got in Blount's face should have been suspended a game.  He acted like a punk.  I say since Blount has shown how sor ...(more)

By allowing LeGarrette Blount to meet higher standards in order to earn back a spot on the Oregon football team, Coach Kelly is sending what I believe is a positive message to his players: Screw up and suffer the consequences, but if you make a mistake, don't just hang your head and quit, but do everything you can to make up for it.

The kid earned some punishment when he punched the Boi

When you take a look at the polls today and there's 3 of the 4 are from the SEC it says a lot.  The loser of the FLA / LSU game won't fall that far down the pollesters. Alabama will be ready to show what a strong balanced team can Even a 1 loss team with these guys is still going to register a shot at the championship.

Blount made a bad decision.  He didn't handle the situation right.  How this situation is handled will set a precedence.  However, folks are either overlooking or have a short memory as to what may have triggered this unfortunate act. From what I have seen through the media reruns is this guy for BSU said something to Blount and even slapped him on the ...(more)

Come on people I have a problem with why so many are having a problem with this... Did he do wrong? Absolutely and yes he should be suspended.  Call me crazy but how does banning him for the rest of the season solve anything?  I understand many want to punish him for being a "thug" but aren't we setting up a situation where we are making it impossible for someone to redeem t ...(more)

I might say maybe if all he did was punch the Boise St player after the guy talked smacked right after a tough loss...maybe somewhere find forgiveness after a few games suspension.  But after all that rage to follow with pushing teammates, coaches, cops, security, and fans...sorry bro you got to go.  There's no place or tolerance for that especially when you're getting a free education.& ...(more)

His actions were unexcusable. To give a college student-athlete thats not able to hold back a punch in any situation a chance to come back as if time erased the occurance, then that shows Oregon's athletic dept. morals are pretty low and will give Oregon a bad reputation. So will it with the NCAA.

Watch the video of the punch. Yes, it "d

The punch was only the easy thing to talk about.  It was attacking his own teammate, cops, fans, etc that made the whole suspension.

Whatever "they" decide to do to him, I hope he has a great NFL career and lives a long productive life with a wonder wife, beautiful children, and goes on to live in heaven forever.  Seriously.  He had a very bad moment and got pun

If they didn't reinstate Blount and it directly affected his draft positioning Blount has clear-cut case against Univ. of Oregon for unfairly diminishing his earning potential in the NFL.  There have been innumerable cases in NCAAF where players were not dismissed for a full season for similar (sometimes worse) issues any of which could be cited as precedence in judgement handed down in favor ...(more)

Seeing the responses on here I just shake my head. This is Blounts senior season; has had the fear of god put in him and has just become a new father. I thought the idea was to make the guy mature and learn and grow as a human being and be a part of society? For those of you who just want to give him the death penalty and write him off then you have no idea what college is about. Not only is ...(more)

I'am all for a second chance for people, what everyone seems to skip on this issue, is that, this would be about a 4th chance for this young man, he has had various issues over his time at Oregon. One other aspect, one that I think is more important , is that athletes should learn to handle their composure at the lower levels, I'm sorry, but there is only one more level to go for young Mr. Blount, ...(more)

I am a Gator fan so I have no Dog in this fight. I am pushing 50 now and I have hopefully learned a little along the way. Look, Blount is young and he made a TERRIBLE choice that night. In the heat of the moment he lost his head and punched a guy with the world watching and he needs to be punished; but his entire Senior season? I just feel that is too much. Right after the hit he apologized to ...(more)
