SEC supervisor: Penalty on UGA's Green shouldn't have been called

The excessive celebration penalty against Georgia's A.J. Green late in Saturday's game with LSU should not have been called, the SEC supervisor of officials told CBSSports.com.

Rogers Redding, the SEC supervisor of officials, said Monday that after reviewing video of the play, "I've concluded that it was one that we probably should have let go."

Trailing 12-7 at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia's Joe Cox threw a touchdown pass to Green with only 1:09 remaining to give Georgia a 13-12 lead. Green was mobbed by his teammates in the end zone.

Officials ruled, however, that during the celebration Green was guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct and Georgia was penalized 15-yards on the ensuing kickoff. Georgia had to kick off from its own 15-yard line. After a 40-yard kickoff return by LSU’s Trindon Holliday, LSU had great field position on the Georgia 38-yard line. Charles Scott later ran 33 yards for a touchdown with 46 seconds left to give LSU the 20-13 victory. The penalty sparked outrage from the Georgia fans. Coach Mark Richt said Sunday that he didn't see the action that caused the penalty to be called on Green. After the game officials issued a statement that Green had gestured to the crowd. That gesture does not show up on the video of the game, which was televised by CBS.

"We tell our guys not to go looking for this stuff but if it's right in your face, you have to call it," Redding said. "He [the SEC official] is beating himself up pretty bad over this one."

"The video doesn't support what the official called," Redding said. "He was celebrating with his teammates, which is fine. The officials were trying to herd them up and get them to the sideline, and what the official reacted to was the player coming out from that group of teammates and making what appeared to be a gesture to the crowd."

From a different angle, Redding said, it appeared the player merely stumbled while trying to separate himself from the group, which back judge Michael Watson interpreted as Green gesturing to the Sanford Stadium crowd -- a no-no under college football's strict unsportsmanlike conduct rule.

"They were high-fiving and bouncing around," the SEC coordinator said. "What I didn't see was any action on the part of the player in question to demonstrate to the fans or draw any kind of special attention to himself."

Redding said the blown call would be treated like any other -- a chance to educate the officials so they'll get it right the next time. He wouldn't comment on whether any disciplinary action was planned against Watson, saying the SEC never discusses those issues publicly.

Green said all along he didn't do anything wrong. While the officials had nothing to do with Georgia allowing the long kickoff return to Holliday or failing to wrap up Scott when he appeared to be stopped at the line on the winning TD, Watson's call has rekindled debate about whether the unsportsmanlike conduct rule is too harsh.

"I was just celebrating with my team," Green said.

In the past few years, the NCAA rules committee has tightened up the unsportsmanlike conduct rule already on the books in an attempt to prevent players from taunting opponents or drawing attention to themselves with extended celebrations. It bans such things as interacting with the fans, going into the crowd or throwing the ball.

Two other such calls were made in the LSU-Georgia game, including one on Scott after his winning TD.

Redding said his video review of the other penalties showed they were both justified, though Scott said he was merely pointing at the sky to give credit "to the Lord" -- not gesturing toward the crowd.

Even Florida coach Urban Meyer, whose top-ranked team faces LSU on Saturday night, took issue with the flag on Green.

"That's just awful," Meyer told reporters in Gainesville, Fla. "I can't stand that when then happens. I just think that's wrong."

It was a great game, at least in the second half, but Georgia got screwed by that unnecessary flag.
It was a stupid call. It's too bad the officials can't be penalized for ridiculous calls.

Let me first state that I am all for keeping celebrations under control in college football. We dont need to see Riverdance or players whipping out sharpies, but this is getting a little ridiculous. The call on Green was a joke and I dont agree with the call on Scott either. He just ran in the game winning TD and he showed a little emotion and pointed in the air. He didnt taunt or try to make a sp ...(more)

You said for UGA to suck it up like lsu did. IF lsu sucked it up, why are you still crying. That was the past. How many years are you gonna cry about it. The SEC was asked by Mark to tell him what Green did wrong. After watching the take he siply said that it was a blown call. H ...(more)

I mean how worthless is this - LSU won the end.  I am a Dawg lifer but these types of things are worthless to come and say.  Lose the stupid rule - let these kids have fun and quit putting stuff like this out on Monday only to torment the team that lost and sending up a dark cloud of "what if's".  We lost - LSU deserves the win.  UGA is not that good right now and the ...(more)

First off i hate to take the human element out of sports. But when you have clowns making calls like this. Now hey say he feel bad. HIS AZZ SHOULD FEEL BAD. I am the first person that says no one call wins a game. IF the dogs could have run the ball Saturday, they win. If ...(more)

They call football "A game of Inches" for a reason.  Every yard and first down counts.  That official gave LSU almost a quarter of the field and that is very significant on any drive especially at the end of the game.  I just don't understand the call at all.  At that point in the game, to throw that flag, it should HAVE to be something obvious that everyone recognizes to throw ...(more)

Right after this penalty, Charles Scott ran in another TD and dropped to his knees and pointed to the sky, and the refs through another flag, same call.  Why didn't the SEC supervisor of officials make any mention of this?  If they really felt that the UGA call was a mistake, and the LSU call was appropriate, that's fine.  As a fan, I think I'd just like to know exactly what constit ...(more)

I don't care that the ref admits it was a bad call. They keep making bad calls. I know they are human, but poor officiating should not keep making this big of a difference in a football game. They need to make some changes. While i don't know if Georgia's defense would have stopped them anyway, this call definitely made a huge difference in the distance LSU had to go.

Very stupid, very subjective rule.  Get rid of it.  They are much worst things young college age men can be doing besides self promotion.

The official who threw the flag should be banned from future SEC games (and maybe all games) for the rest of the season (at least).  He saw something no one else saw including the replay video.  Must have been hallucinating.  It was totally unncecessary and impacted the outcome of the game.  Officials are not supposed to do that.  Momentum was thwarted and ruined a perfect ...(more)

I am shocked that the SEC supervisor would come out and throw his refs under the bus.  Its pathetic and comepletly inconsitant with how they have operated in the past.  In 2006 LSU got totally robed against Aub.  Aub knew it, the media knew it and the world knew it.  The SEC powers that be, defended their refs saying that not one, I repeat NOT ONE call that was made in ...(more)

I was outraged as a student/fan at the University of Georgia when the ref made this call.  This clearly helped to give great field position and a shift in momentum to LSU.  The players were emotional (and they should be).  Football is a game of passion and you see teams celebrate like this every single weekend!  This was a very close game in which both teams fought their heart ...(more)

After reading Tony Barnhart story on the conversation with the SEC Supervisor of Officials, I believe the celebration penalty is a flag that officials should keep their flags in their pockets after a touchdown.  The unsportsmanlike conduct penalty should be called if after a touchwown the player shows the ball to the defender tries to show up the defense.  Georgia should have won the gam ...(more)
