'Bama jumps over Florida for No. 1 spot; Cincy cracks top five

NEW YORK -- After a steady climb, Alabama has reached the top of the AP poll.

The Crimson Tide jumped Florida and landed at No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 on Sunday.

The unbeaten Gators had been in the top spot since the preseason, but the Crimson Tide have been gaining ground for weeks by winning more convincingly than the Gators.

The final surge came after Alabama beat South Carolina 20-6 on Saturday and Florida needed a field goal in the waning seconds to beat Arkansas 23-20 at home.

The Crimson Tide, which received 10 first-place votes last week, got 39 out of 59 from the media panel. Florida received the other 20 first-place votes.

Texas is No. 3, followed by Southern California, Cincinnati and Boise State at No. 6. The Broncos dropped a spot.

The first BCS standings also came out Sunday and Florida was in first place, followed by Alabama, Texas and Boise State.

Unbeaten Iowa moved up four places after beating Wisconsin 20-10 on the road. Miami, LSU and TCU round out the top 10.

Alabama started the season ranked fifth, then immediately moved up a spot to fourth after beating Virginia Tech to start the season. After two weeks at No. 4, the Crimson Tide moved up another spot to No. 3.

After three weeks behind Florida and Texas, Alabama jumped the Longhorns last week and finished the climb to No. 1 on Sunday.

Alabama was No. 1 for five weeks in the second half of last season, including two weeks when SEC rival Florida was No. 2.

The Gators, the defending national champions, came into the season as an overwhelming No. 1, receiving the highest of percentage of first-place votes ever in the preseason poll.

But Tim Tebow and the Gators have sputtered offensively and had trouble putting away the better teams on their schedule. They had 10-point victories against Tennessee and LSU before beating Arkansas on a field goal with 9 seconds left.

Alabama's four SEC victories have been by an average of 19 points, with the closest margin being 14 against South Carolina.

Florida's four SEC wins have been by an average of 14 points, but that was padded by a 34-point victory against Kentucky.

"Saturday, after watching Florida give up big plays to an offense Alabama completely shut down, I decided to make the switch," said Andy Staples of SI.com. "Alabama, at the moment, seems to have fewer weaknesses than anyone else."

Alabama also has a nonconference victory against No. 15 Virginia Tech. Florida has played only one ranked team, LSU.

"I had been reluctant to make a switch at No. 1, even though Alabama has looked good all year," wrote Mike Strain, of the Tulsa World, in an e-mail. "But after Saturday, I voted Alabama No. 1, because I think the Crimson Tide [have] produced more impressive performances than Florida so far."

Georgia Tech made the biggest jump in the rankings this week, moving up eight spots to No. 11 after beating Virginia Tech 28-23.

The Hokies dropped 11 spots from No. 4 to 15. Ohio State also dropped 11 spots to 18. The Buckeyes were upset 26-18 at Purdue.

Oregon is No. 12, followed by Penn State and Oklahoma State.

No. 16 BYU then Houston, Ohio State, Utah and Pittsburgh finish the first 20.

Pitt, No. 21 Texas Tech and No. 22 West Virginia are ranked for the first time this season.

No. 23 South Carolina, No. 24 Kansas and No. 25 Oklahoma all lost, but remained ranked.

The Sooners, who have lost three games to ranked teams by a combine five points -- with Sam Bradford missing most of each game - are the first team to be ranked with a 3-3 record since Tennessee in Oct. 23, 2005.

The Volunteers finished that season unranked and with a sub-.500 record.

Falling out of the rankings this week were Notre Dame, South Florida and Nebraska.

OK, l like the Big East; but are you going to tell me that Cincy can really play with anyone from the Top 15? Who the heck have they played? No one good from the Big East so far, Fresno State? Miami O?  Come on.. Obviously the AP is trying to spread the wealth among conferences when they to their rankings.

Alabama passing Florida for the top spot in the AP top 25 poll is no surprise to me. Not only do I think that the Alabama Crimson Tide is better than the Florida Gators but I also think that they are the best team in the land and I project them to win the National Championship. The Tide are 7 and 0 with wins over Virginia Tech, Mississippi, and South Caroline highlighting their resume. Their ...(more)

We don't even deserve to be #2. I realize we lost Harvin and Murphy, but good god where is our offense? Defense wins titles, but they're gonna need help on the other side of the ball for that to happen and as long as Steve A. is the O-coordinator that is never gonna happen. He needs to worry about his O-line that gave up 6 sacks.

THE AP shouldnt have a poll.  Its not part of the BCS ranking system and doesnt count for anything.

They used to be part of the BCS ranking but took themselves out because they said as a news organization they should only report the news, not make it.  So why are they still running a poll?  It doesnt affect which two teams will play in the BCS championship game

Well, it took long enough but, Alabama..the phoniest team (2nd only to Ohio State)...cried their way into the number one spot.  This poll is a total joke.  I mean do we really need to see what's coming next?  Florida kills them in the title game, they go to a BCS bowl, get crushed again (hopefully by Utah)...who by the way should have ran up the score on you but, didn't .&nb ...(more)

Boise is number 4 in the opening BCS. The problem is that their key win already happened. They will drop against other undefeated teams as the season goes on due to their SOS most likely.
So, unlikely as it is, who has to lose for Boise to make the NCG? Also how many losses? Will it take 2 losses from all of the top 5 or so teams?
I think all but one of Bama, FL, USC, TX and maybe Miami

The Crimson Tide really is #1, if you go by what they've done.  Oklahoma is probably even better than #25 but I certainly do understand that even being ranked shows that many of the voters are more discriminating than you normally think.

OU lost to #3, Texas, by 3-points.  The Sooners lost to #8, Miami, and #16, BYU, by 1-pt each.  In all three o ...(more)

Why is USC ranked so high? Don't think it's complete bias on my part because I'm all in favor of them being ahead of my LSU tigers. However; I don't feel they should be number 4. It may be a cushion so Boise doesn't break in further, but in all honesty you can compare schedules and see they don't deserve their ranking. USC lost to Washington, whom LSU did beat. LSU lost came against Florida. It's ...(more)

I'm not a Gator fan but for some reason I like Meyer. I think this drop to 2nd may wake up the Gators with a little slap in the face as they really have not played like a number 1 team the last two games.

Explain the logic of these polls to me.  Notre Dame is supposed to lose by 2 tds to an elite SC team.  Instead a USC victory is sealed on a sure-fire td gone wrong when the wr slips just out of his cut in the final second....so an extremely close game.  Notre Dame is now not considered worthy of being in the top 25.  Stuff like that is stupid.  It's not just ND...it hap ...(more)

Why is USC ranked so high, beats me  cause they have proved nothing major this season much like Oklahoma.  Here is a break down with the facts.

We'll start with Oklahoma cause they are simple.  They are good enough to kick the crap out of unranked teams with a combined score of 142-7.  And saying that makes you think wow, they are really ...(more)

The Utah Utes suck. They have the easiest games. Their wins are over Louisville, Colorado State, UNLV, San Jose State and Utah State. OVERRATED! They should not be in top 25. Kick them out and put Ole Miss in their place. GO FROGS! UTES SUCK!

As a Gator fan, I actually like being in the 2nd spot.  Lower expectations and we've won 2 of the last 3 national championships from the 2nd seed.  And barring an unseen twist, Bama and Florida will have an opportunity to settle this debate on the field just like last season.  If Bama truly is better than the Gators, they'll win fair and square.

However, to those o

This team should not be in the top 25.  Signature W against an unranked Wisconsin.  Almost lost to Navy.  Lost to 2-5 Purdue.  OSU was overrated all year, and should not be ranked at all, much less in the top 20.  What a joke.
