Meyer confident in SEC's decision to suspend officials

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer thinks the Southeastern Conference was right to suspend an officiating crew after its second controversial call of the year.

Referee Marc Curles' crew called a personal foul on Arkansas defensive lineman Malcolm Sheppard in the fourth quarter as the Gators were rallying for a 23-20 victory last weekend. The league said Wednesday there was no video evidence to support the call.

The same group of officials called the LSU-Georgia game earlier this month, which included a late unsportsmanlike conduct penalty the league said shouldn't have been called.

SEC commissioner Mike Slive said the crew would be pulled from its next scheduled assignment Oct. 31 and won't work again until Nov. 14. Bowl assignments could also be impacted.

"If that's the right thing to do, then they did it," Meyer said Thursday. "I don't know all the ins and outs ... [but] I have great confidence in the head dog."

SEC suspends crew | Petrino reprimanded

Slive said the entire crew shoulders responsibility for each play, and said the suspension was necessary to maintain accountability among officials.

"Our institutions expect the highest level of officiating in all of our sports and it is the duty of the conference office to uphold that expectation," he said.

SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said it is the first time the league has publicly suspended a football crew in this type of situation, the only decision that Meyer questioned.

"Why would you do that?" he said. "I don't understand that part."

Also on Thursday, the league said it had reprimanded Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino for publicly criticizing the officials.

Seriously, it's time for you boys to hike up your skirts and stop crying like a bunch of school girls that got dumped at prom...

Yes, the personal foul was a bad call, but let's look at the facts. That call came at the very end of a 14 play drive in which Tebow was running the ball right down your throat and passing at will. So, the refs moved the ball from to 20

CBS definitely twisted his words as he did not agree with anything.  I f he was a real man, he should have mentioned gmae changing calls that could have jeopardized their chances of winning the game.  Urbam ,eyer has the intestinal fortitude of a rat.

This crew should definitely be suspended...the personal file was ridiculous, but the pass interference called on Ark and the one not called on Florida on the last series were also up there...

Does anyone else think that these SEC officials recognize that there is no benefit to the SEC to having a sub-500 conference team beat the number one team in the nation that is poised for a BCS t

I don't blame Tim Tebow, in fact, I like all that he stands for, BUT he should get an unsportsmanlike conduct every time he goes bonkers after a 2-yard run flexing his muscles. If a wide receiver does that in the end zone he gets flagged, but no one ever says anything to Tebow. The SEC needs to address that.

I understand refs will make bad calls but why would a whole crew get suspended ? If you work with a guy and he makes a screw up suspend him not everyone on the crew that seems alittle harsh. The artical only mentions one bad call are they sus[ending the whole crew over one bad call in a game that has hundreds of calls in a game if we kick out every ref who makes one bad call per game pretty soon t ...(more)

"Meyer says SEC is right in suspending officals" vs. Meyer:  If that's the right thing to do, then they did it," Meyer said Thursday. "I don't know all the ins and outs ... [but] I have great confidence in the head dog."

I think CBS is jumping to conclusions!

The gifts are over meyer. man up and admit that you got more than one call you way. I am not saying UF loses without the calls because Ark couldnt kick field goals. But the crew gave you EVERY chance to win. The the offensive pass interference no call in the end zone on gator number 11 was ANOTHER blown call. Every call again EVERY call in a g ...(more)
