Oklahoma State WR Bryant to stay suspended for season

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant will remain suspended for the remainder of the football season for lying to NCAA investigators.

The NCAA ruled Tuesday that the junior All-American will not be eligible to play until September 2010, possibly bringing his college career to an end if he enters the NFL Draft.

Oklahoma State plans to appeal the decision, but athletic department spokesman Kevin Klintworth declined further comment. The university said it could receive a decision on the appeal as early as next week.

The university announced on Oct. 7 that Bryant was ineligible because he lied to the NCAA about his relationship with former NFL star Deion Sanders. He has sat out the last four games for the No. 13 Cowboys (6-1, 3-0 Big 12), who host No. 3 Texas on Saturday night in a game that will likely determine which team plays for the Big 12 championship.

The NCAA said in a news release that Bryant's penalty actually constituted "relief" from even more severe penalties for breaking the agency's rules for ethical conduct and preferential treatment. Bryant could have been forced to miss as few as six games or be permanently ineligible.

The NCAA said mitigating factors presented in Oklahoma State's case resulted in a lighter penalty for Bryant. The decision was based on whether Bryant "actively and deliberately concealed, omitted or provided inaccurate or false information" to the NCAA and whether he had multiple chances to provide accurate information but did not do so.

E-mail exchanges between an Oklahoma State compliance official and the NCAA indicate that there was concern that Bryant's meeting with Sanders was a way to connect him to an agent, something Sanders has denied. Bryant claimed in a letter of apology to the NCAA that he jogged briefly with Sanders at a Texas athletics center without breaking a sweat and then went to Sanders' house for dinner, but did not eat.

Oklahoma State said in its reinstatement request that it would classify the meeting as a violation of NCAA rules prohibiting preferential treatment.

Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. This season, Bryant led the team with 17 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns through OSU's first three games.

While Bryant played in OSU's first three games, OSU compliance officials were investigating an apparent meeting he had with former NFL players Sanders and Omar Stoutmire that he later lied about to the NCAA. Bryant sent a letter with his initial application for reinstatement, asking to play again this season and that his "punishment is not so bad that I do not get to play football again at OSU."

Bryant has not commented publicly since the university ruled him ineligible because he "failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player not affiliated with OSU." Sanders later identified himself as that player, and Bryant also referred to him in his letter to the NCAA.

After his initial suspension, the university released a statement from Bryant saying "I made a mistake by not entirely truthful when meeting with the NCAA."

So the kid from Oregon that punched the Bosie State player has a chance to come back this year but someone that hangs out with Deion Sanders can't? This doesn't make any sense. This is hardly hurting a sure fire top 15 talent. Now the only thing he can't do is get injured oh big deal. Way to ruin fans watching an electric talent on the field till next year when he is playing in the NFL.

NCAA is a bunch of retards! Who cares that a suree fire NFL tp 10 pick may or may not have talked to some pros. Business is business and when your a top athlete you have to not only align yourself o help your future but you need to be surrounded by the right people also. Get off your high horse and set up a fair protocol for these top athletes to be able to speak on behalf of themselves for there ...(more)

This new football league should have started a rookie league. Sign players out of high school to 3 or 4 year contracts, allow them to get paid and work on football and then when their contract is up, go into the nfl draft. If they want to go to college, they can pay for it out of their earnings instead of paying these schools millions in the form of slave labor. This would essentually put the NCAA ...(more)

Texas has already played the bulk of their schedule and basically all the tough games are behind them except for the rematch with Oklahoma State in Stillwater this weekend.  I know that Kansas is not bad and on a great day they can push the Longhorns, but the game is in Austin so I doubt Texas will have a problem.  The point is that everyone has circled this weekend's game with the Cowbo ...(more)

wah, wah, wah, oh stop your cryin. you see some of the crap and injuries other teams endure. i liked a couple of post, oh playing for slave labor. well my answer is if thats how they felt, get the hell out of the school system, who needs them anyway, and most players would not make it without playing in college. oh the other one, about the stupidity of the founding fathers...if you don't like it go ...(more)

President Clinton got off easier for lying to Congress. He committed a felony and was impeached but was no suspended or forced to resign. He only blamed a right wing conspiracy for it. Dez lies because he panics which in my opinion is a good excuse when you are his age and thinking you might have done something wrong.  He gets suspended for the season and the rest of his life is affected. He ...(more)

One plays for an established program.  One plays for a program trying to crack into the top tier.
So Bryant lies about something that is not a violation and gets suspended for the entire year.  Jerrell Harris lies about something that is an actual violation and gets a 6 game suspension.  Odd.  Can someone explain this to me?

The NCAA is killing two birds with one stone. First, get Deion Sanders out of football.  The NFL is blaming Sanders for Crabtree's holdout and now the NCAA is suspending a player for "lieing" about having contact with Deion.  The real reason is Deion.  The NCAA is telling players to stay away from Deion and telling former NFL players to stay out of NCAA Footba ...(more)

I had commented when this story first broke how much of a joke the NCAA has become. They should be focusing on things like academics or getting a playoff system to crown a true national champion. They dont need to concern themselves with a kid have dinner with a former NFL player. The NCAA got a second chance to make things right and they blew it as usual. So if an engineering student has dinn ...(more)

If the NCAA is going to punish someone for lying about doing something that isn't even against the rules, then they need to either explain their line of questioning before asking, or ask the player in question to talk to someone familiar with the rules before answering.  You have protections against your own stupidity & ignorance in the justice system & the NCAA should take that cue ...(more)

and I am so not kidding.  Tell me this is a joke.  It just reminds me of the oppression within the fabric of America's culture.  How did so many "smart" people come up with so mant dumb rules.  Our country was founded on studpidity with the founding fathers and it has trickled down over the years.  This has to be one of the dumbest rules known to mankind and the heads of t ...(more)

"The NCAA said mitigating factors presented in Oklahoma State's case resulted in a lighter penalty for Bryant"

Wow. Thanks, NCAA for your gracious act of mercy. This whole thing would make a lot more sense if the NCAA divulged what the real problem is here. Is it retribution for the Andrew Oliver decision? The timing is suspect. That decision was announced what? Two weeks ago?

So the NCAA is now telling people who they can and can't hang out with?? I just don't understand why its such a bad thing that this kid went to go see Sanders and Stoutmire. Are they punishing him for seeing them or for lying about it? Because honestly both are very stupid reasons to suspend a kid for the whole year.

We have all these players doing stuff a lot worse t ...(more)

I'd really really really really like to look at the "Offical" reports on:

OU and Rhett Bomar and "undisclosed players NOT working for Big Red Motors"
USC and incongruent official residential addresses of Reggie Bush and parental figure, and I won't ask about that $300K...
Alabama and "impermissable benefits" which only led to "vacating 21 vic

I am a native Oklahoman and have seen both of the state school devastated by the NCAAA (see the 1990's).  Why does USC continue to get a free pass for violations that the Oklahoma schools were crucified for?
